WEEK ONE BLOG ENTRY (write your own entry and then come back and respond to other students)

Introduce yourself to the class.

You might consider some of the following questions: where are you from? What is your major?
Why are you taking an online course?
What is your favorite book?
What is your favorite food?
What is the farthest you have traveled from home?
What did you do over Winter Break?

Respond to any of these questions or anything else to tell us about yourself.

THEN, AFTER OTHERS HAVE RESPONDED, COME BACK TO THE BLOG AND RESPOND TO THEIR POSTS.

Remember, you may not wait until Saturday to do these posts. If you do that, you will not receive credit. The reason for that is that the blog is supposed to get you to write, read, write, in a community with others in our class. If you wait until Saturday, you are basically just writing to yourself. No one will really read what you write or respond to it--so write during the week.

  1. Hi! My name is Blair and I am a Business Administration major with a concentration in accounting. I decided to take this online course because it fit well with my schedule and I need extra units in order to become a CPA. My favorite foods are tacos and cheesecake. The furthest I've traveled from home is Italy. This winter break I visited family in Arizona and flew to Tennessee to see a friend.

    3. Hello all, my name is Will Cross and I am a Criminal Justice major with a concentration in law enforcement. I am taking this course because it will hopefully help me with my writing schools and it also is helping me advance in my field of study. My favorite food is chicken. The furthest I have raveled to is Chicago. This winter break did not go so well for me as I was going through a hard break up. But I'm out of it now so it's all good.

  2. Hello, My name is Joshua Turowski I am a Criminal Justice major minoring in Sociology. I plan on graduating this spring, I took an online course because I currently am taking four other on campus courses. Online courses offer much more flexibility. The farthest I have traveled is to Poland as all my family lives there in which I try to visit at least once a year. Over winter break I visited with family and worked in the construction field.

I agree with taking this online course for the flexibility of it. Have you taken many online courses? This is the first online course I have taken.

My major is sociology, how do you like it so far? I hope your last semester is great, all the hard work is paying off. Do you have any plans for after graduation? How does it feel to be almost done?

    5. Hello Joshua,

CRJU is a cool major. I also learned that computer science is ethically similar to it. I agree that online courses provide flexibility, in relation to on-campus classes. I am taking this class for the same kind of reason as well. It is very nice that you got to visit Poland. I am interested in visiting England and other European countries. Congratulations on trying to graduate this semester. Good luck in this class.

  3. Greetings!

My name is Destiny, and I am a Biology major specializing in Veterinary Medicine. After I graduate, I plan on opening my own practice. I decided to take this course because I am enrolled in 6 other courses, and this one fit my schedule. I went to Ridgeview High School and graduated in 2014. I was born and raised in Bakersfield, California but I also lived in Tucson, Arizona for 4 years. The farthest I've traveled from home is El Paso, Texas to visit family members. I didn't do much over break but spend time with family, relax, and recoup for this coming semester.

    1. Destiny...El Paso is pretty far away. It doesn't seem like it since it's still in the U.S., but this country is so massive that in distance terms, it's far.
I'm glad you were able to rest a bit over break!

  4. Hi,
My name is Melissa Navarro. I am a senior at California State University, Bakersfield, studying to obtain my bachelors degree in psychology with a minor in criminal justice. I am taking this course online because it works perfect with schedule and because I enjoy the professor's form of teaching. My favorite book is Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. I actually read the book during winter break. The book was extremely inspiring and changed my perception about life and death. I recommend the book to anyone who is interested in finding a purpose and meaning in life. My favorite type of food is Thai and sushi. I am a real food lover! The furthest I have traveled has been to Jalisco, Mexico. To enjoyed my winter break, I read, worked, hiked to the Hollywood sign, ate amazing seafood in Los Angeles, and went to "the happiest place on Earth", Disneyland.

  5. Hello Everyone! My name is Theresa Beaver. I am a junior majoring in Biology. As a mother, an online course provides a little more freedom in my schedule to ensure I can drop off and pick up my daughter. I love to read, so deciding on one single book is a bit difficult. However, if I had to choose just one, it would probably be "The Shining" by Stephen King. The furthest I've traveled has been to Eufaula, Oklahoma - which is a tiny town about an hour and a half from Tulsa. I'm looking forward to a great semester and I wish you all the best of luck!

  6. Hello, my name is joaquin Mancilla and I am a Child Adolescence major. I decided to take this course online, well to be honest I don't know why I'm taking an online class this is my first online class I've ever taken I am more of going to a classroom and learn, I'm not so much of a taking classes online only because I love to interact with humans, lol. My favorite food would have to be, well I like all foods and I don't discriminate against its deliciousness glory lol but if I have to pick one from all of them would be popusas, for those who don't know what a popusa is, it's like a stuffed quesadilla it is really good you guys should really try them they are delicious. The furthest I've travel would have to have Europe it was an amazing time had a lot of fun out there with my brother and the people out there are very kind and surprisingly happy, only because I've heard so many stories about Europe and well I was proven wrong. This winter break I took a vacation for myself, to which my family thought it was selfish of me to just leave like that but hey? We all need some time apart from the family, am I right? As far as to where I traveled to, I went to Las Vegas for two weeks and then after that I went to New York City and I must say it was the best four weeks of my life.

  7. Hey y'all, my name is Jason Jeffries and this is my last semester here at CSUB. I am also an accounting major and went to Arizona over break, seems like we already have a lot in common Blair, Cool. I was born and raised here in Bakersfield and never plan to leave since Bakersfield is so centralized and one of the best places for business in the valley. In my spare time I like to dig for shark teeth at shark tooth hill in Bakersfield and I also like to fly radio controlled planes, wishing I could become a fighter pilot someday. I am taking this class because I love reading and writing plus it fits into my schedule perfectly since it's an online class. Over winter break I worked as much as I could and traveled out of town a few times. My favorite food is Italian so, I love Olive Garden. I hope this semester will be the best one yet and that I will learn a lot from this class. Nice meeting everyone!

  8. Hi everyone, my name is Kimberly and I'm in the nursing program at CSUB. I am taking an online course because it fits better with my schedule than a face-to-face class. I'm originally from Fresno, but I've travelled all over for work and school. The furthest I've travelled from home is Costa Rica; I went last summer for a study abroad course. I don't have a favorite book, but I'm currently reading The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand which I'm really enjoying. Over winter break I caught up on sleep, went to a couple concerts, and mentally prepared myself for the coming semester. I'm looking forward to this class and learning as much as I can!

  10. Hi everyone, my name is Emily Quintero and my major is Liberal Studies. I am currently in my third year at Cal State Bakersfield. I am taking this online course, because it fit well with my schedule. I do not have a favorite book, but hopefully I get to read interesting books in this course. I like Mexican food. My favorite dish is enchiladas. They are super yummy. The farthest I traveled has been to Mexico. I have family there, so it is nice to see them when I get the chance to travel there. I went to Mexico during winter break, and that was exciting. During winter break, I tried to sleep in the most I can. I had a break from work too, but that ended quicker than my school winter break. I work at a daycare and I enjoy working with children. It gives me lots of experience for my future teaching job. I hope everyone has an awesome semester!

    1. Hi Emily! What are some of the most memorable experiences - good and bad - that you had working at a daycare? What subject and grade level do you want to teach in the future? Working with children seems both fun and scary.

    2. Hi Yang! To walk in my job and be welcomed with hugs by the children is a great joy! That has to top my good memorable experiences. I dislike having to raise my voice when children are not following rules. I would like to teach all subjects, since my goal is to teach in elementary. I would like to teach from kindergarten to sixth grade, but preferably kindergarten.

    4. Hi Emily, its cool that the girl I sat next to art is in my online class! What do you do when the kids are acting very bad to the point that they frustrate you? From personal experience from working with children, I know that some days they can be super active and act out of the ordinary and that can catch you off guard.

    5. Hey Emily,
I first of all, I want to bring to your attention the fact that we have the same last name! This is actually the first time I come across someone with the same last name as me, I think that is awesome. It is also interesting how you work with kids, I also work with kids but in the after school school program. How do you like your job? Do you have kids of all ages or are they all part of a particular age group?

    6. Yang- If a child refuses to listen then I usually put them in time out for a bit. It seems to be very helpful!

Bianca- Hi Bianca, that is super cool! I know who to ask now if I have any questions on either class. I either put the kids on time out, or take their privilege away from playing with toys or outside. Yes, the kids can be super active!

Deisy- Hi Deisy, it is pretty cool that we have the same last name. It is not a usual last name. I love my job! I work with TK through sixth grade.

  11. Hello everyone. My name is Yang Ding and I am from China. I am currently a nursing major, but I plan on switching to computer science this semester. I am taking an online course because it is perfect for my schedule since I have to take care of my younger siblings at home while my parents are at work. My siblings are three years-old and nine years-old. I turned twenty-one two months ago. Sometimes I wonder if my parents deliberately planned this massive age gap between me and my siblings so that I am old and mature enough to act as a free babysitter for their children. My favorite book is Fahrenheit 451. My favorite food is sushi, pho, steak, crab legs, lobsters, shrimp, tacos, Chinese food, Korean BBQ, and any food that doesn’t involve cooked fish and eggplants. The farthest I have traveled from home was to the United States. Despite living in this country for 13 years, in my heart I still consider China as my home. Over winter break, I spent as much time as I could with my girlfriend because I do not get to see her often since we live four hours away from each other.

    2. Hi Blair! It was definitely hard to transition because everything was vastly different - the language, food, and cultural norms. I came to Bakersfield because a majority of my dad's family lived here so my grandma wanted to bring us all together.

    3. Hey Yang!
I can relate to your pain with having to babysit your younger siblings. My little brother is 5 years old and I am 22! Do you enjoy living in the states? I haven't moved more than 3 hours away from where I grew up so that seems so hard to be away from your home.

      Delete
    4. Hi Joann! It is indeed a pain right? This huge age gap between me and my siblings always get people asking me, "How old are your children?" and I always have to explain to them that I am their sister, which results in an awkward "Oh I see." Do you babysit your brother all the time? Or do you get to have some free time to yourself every once in a while? Living in the states is fun. I see that you live in Tehachapi! How is it like over there compared to Bakersfield and Lancaster?

  12. Hello Everyone! My name is Deisy Quintero, (Daisy) spelled in a unique way. I am a Sociology major with a minor in Business Administration. This is my third year attending CSU Bakersfield and the reason why I am taking this online course is for several reasons; one reason is because it fits perfectly with my schedule, and the other reason is because I needed units so I decided to take this class instead of the exam. Reading is not my favorite thing to do, but if I find a book enjoyable I will read non-stop. I do not have a favorite book at the moment but I enjoy reading anything that catches my attention. My favorite food is Mexican and Italian food. Considering the fact that the farthest place I have traveled is Mexico, I would love to visit Italy one day and enjoy their tasty food as well. Over the winter break I slept in as much as I could and hung out with friends. I also worked during break but since I work in the after school program I had a two week break from work as well. Overall, it was a nice break. Also, I will be turning twenty one this Saturday so I am excited for that. I hope everyone has a great semester and I am looking forward to this class.

Well what interested me the most about my major is the fact that we study all the global issues that currently affect society. I enjoy learning about social stratification, and all the different factors that affect humans and their behaviors. We also take courses that focus on research, after taking that course I am more interested in doing research myself. Overall, I am enjoying it as well as my business courses.

    7. Marisol, I also took SOC 4000 online last semester! We probably had the same class. It was interesting and I learned lots because I basically had to read and learn everything on my own. I definitely think everyone should learn more about how our society is stratified.

  13. Hi, my name is Joann Gonzalez. I was born in Lancaster, CA but currently live in Tehachapi, CA. My major is general business administration. I'm taking an online class because I don't want to make the commute to Bakersfield each week. I love too many books to choose just one favorite. Some of my favorites include: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Blindness, Kurt Vonnegut books (The Sirens of Titan, Cats Cradle), the Harry Potter series, Chuck Palahnuick books (Choke, Lullaby), and Carrie by Stephen King. My favorite food is macaroni and cheese. The farthest I've traveled from home was to Chicago. Over the winter break I spent most of the time with my family and boyfriend. I took a vacation to Monterey Bay and stayed at a hotel right on the beach. I visited the aquarium there for the first time. My winter break was great but I look forward to learning more at school!

I'm taking an online class because I started working full time and taking an online class will give me a more flexible schedule. It also saves me time and money by not having to drive all week to Bakersfield. However, it's my first time taking an online class. My favorite food is anything that has shrimp or Mexican food. I am always up for trying new food. I don't have a favorite book. However, last semester I read the book Random Family. It was a great book, got to read on the hardships people living in poverty have. The farthest I have traveled from home was to Sinaloa Mexico. Over the winter break I visited my friends and family members. I got to visit my brother in Mexico; it was awesome since I had a long time not seeing him. Overall, it was great being able to spend time with my loved ones. I got to rest to be prepared for a new semester.

    4. Hey Nedia! Online classes are pretty simple for the most part but the hardest thing about them is remembering them! That was my problem at least. It was tough for me with my first online class because I would always forget due dates and forget the class completely. You'll do great!

  16. Hi my name is Claudia Gonzalez I am 28 years old and I am a transferred student from Porterville College. This is my first semester at CSUB and I am very excited and nervous at the same time. I am here to get my BA in Psychology and eventually become a school psychologist. I originally wanted to be some a nurse but since I have been working at a school district I have fallen in love working with children with special needs. I am excited about my journey and I hope to fulfill it one day to help others. I have taken online classes before so this is not my first course online. It's not easy but I am trying my best to do well. I do not have a favorite book because I'm not much of a novel reader but I have recently read a book for another class I am taking and I can say that I enjoyed it, it is called Night. It was sad but great reading at the same time. My favorite food I would have to say that it is tacos. You can't ever go wrong with tacos. Over my winter break I pretty much was getting ready for school, trying to catch up on my ready before the classes started which I am happy that I did because there is more reading that has to be done. Im not much of a reader but I think that after this semester I am going to be. The furthest place I have been I would have to say Missouri, I went out there to visit family and I actually drove so it was a neat experience and I got to see many cool things that I have never seen before. I have no children but I do have four dogs that I love very dearly, you can say that they are my fur babies. They are all small and their names are lily, gizmo, Malachi, and Disney. So that is pretty much about myself and I am looking forward to an awesome semester and hope to meet some pretty amazing people on here as well.

    1. Hi Claudia, I remember the feeling of the first semester at CSUB, I will never forget it, I was so nervous, imagine me returning to school after several years, I used to attend night classes at Bakersfield College because that was what old people did, day time back then was mostly for younger students. So here I come to my first class, a 45 years old woman interacting with students younger than 25, it was so embarrassing and intimidating on a way, but they were very nice and made my quarter go smooth. Any ways, I wanted to share my experience, I wish you the best at CSUB.

The furthest I've traveled has been to Alaska and also Sinaloa, Mexico which is where I am originally from. I love all types of food, so I can honestly say I don't have a favorite one. During the winter break I didn't really do much, which was AMAZING! I took two weeks off from work during the break and I got to spend it with my fiancé and family.

  18. Hello everyone,
My name is Stephanie Vela. I'm originally from Bellflower California, but I was raised in Los Angeles and Bakersfield. My major is Criminal Justice. Honestly I did not even notice this was an online course, and thought I had to come to school every Saturday, lucky me right? I have never taken an online course before, because I was always worried about having questions on assignments and no one answering. As for a favorite book, I cant really answer that since my low attention span causes me to get bored rather quickly instead of getting invested to the actual plot. Books by James Patterson have been my favorite since the chapters are relatively short, I am able to read at least a few chapters at a time. My favorite food would be a tie between Steak and Sushi. Steak is kind of a toss up depending on how it is cooked, I prefer eating mine medium-rare. Sushi, however, I can eat in any style with any ingredients. The furthest I have traveled from home would be Mexico. It takes about a day and a half driving almost non-stop, but I haven't been there in over ten years. Nowadays when I do have time, like winter break, I go visit my brother in Sacramento just for a change of scenery.

    2. Hey Stephanie! I'm the opposite, I usually enjoy online courses because I get to ask anything I want with out being too shy about it. Other wise, I'd be sitting in class wondering if my question is too silly to be asked haha. The only thing that worries me about online classes is that I get way easily distracted with the internet!

      Delete
    3. Would you say you procrastinate more or less online rather than actual in class lectures? I'm starting to enjoy being the boss of when I actually start the assignment and respond to a lecture while still in my pajamas, than I would driving to a class.

      Delete
    4. Hello Stephanie! This is also my first time taking an online course and I too share the same feelings, but I am sure it will all turn out well!

      Delete
    5. It's a lot easier to procrastinate online, but I think it goes hand in hand when you have to do homework at home anyways. Even though you get to start it whenever you want (such as 3am^^ lol), meeting the deadline is the super important part that used to always be my struggle.

  19. Hello everyone!

My name is Bianca Lucatero and I live in Delano, California which is located about 30 miles from Bakersfield. I have 5 classes and driving to Bakersfield everyday can be a hassle so, taking online courses eases that trip. I actually just transferred from Bakersfield College and this is my first semester at CSUB. I am a Liberal Studies major. I actually have a few books that I really enjoy but, I can’t pick just one. My favorite food is lasagna. Whenever we go to a restaurant, the first thing I look for is the pasta section. The farthest I have traveled from home would be Mexico; unfortunately, I haven’t gone in a while. I spent my winter break with my family.

This is also my first semester at CSUB. Still trying to get the hang of things. Good luck to you!

    5. Hi Stephanie, thats so cool! Some restaurants don't have that many options for pasta, but I regardless choose something from that section. Thank you and I hope so too. I hope you have a good semester!

Hi Alma, I thought I was the only person who decided to take a work load for my first semester! Did you also just transfer? I am also trying to get the hang of things. Thank you and good luck to you too!

  20. What's up, everyone?

My name is Michael Crews and I'm an English Literature major aiming towards a minor in Linguistics as well. I decided to take this online course because I was quite satisfied with them last semester when I initially tried for it for the first time. My favorite book is "And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie, which I fully recommend if you love the mystery genre, or want to get into it! I have plenty of favorite foods, but I would definitely say that I enjoy Mexican food quite more than most others. While CSU Bakersfield is quite far away from my home of Hayward, California (four hours away!), the furthest I've traveled thus far is Hawaii, though I wish to go beyond that as soon as I finish college. Over the winter break, I've been focusing on improving my performance on many types of fighting games in order to participate in tournaments around the United States, but primarily California for now. I'm hoping as the semester goes on, my performance, along with my writing, will improve.

    2. Hello Michael,

I hope you enjoy this course. I truly like certain English literature books as well. I like to read, speak, and imitate certain characters in British accents. What kind of games do you currently enjoy? I enjoy a lot of video games. The furthest I have ever traveled is to Central Asia. Do you have any favorite movies? Please let me know.

      Thanks,

      Roshaan S.

    3. Hello Kimberly! Specifically, I want to try to travel to Chicago and New York. Most of the events I've described happen around those areas. As far as what I want to do with my degree, I am considering teaching overseas, hopefully in Japan if not Korea.

Hello Roshaan! As far as types of games, my favorite type is definitely fighting games, but I also enjoy the occasional roleplaying game. I often do both video games and tabletop games, and constantly seek out roleplaying game groups either online or offline. As far as favorite movies, my favorite would definitely have to be Rocky IV. I am quite a big fan of the Rocky series in general.

How is Central Asia? I want to go there one day as well.

My favorite food would have to be between enchiladas or spaghetti. The farthest i have traveled from home would be back to Mexico where my family is from. Once we traveled by car and it was roughly a 28 hour drive, since then we have always flown over there. Over winter break, i spent most of of my time working. I am taking this English course because it works with my schedule since I only taking online courses because I am expecting a baby any day now, and also because I need the credit in order to meet the graduation requirements. My goals after I graduate are to attend graduate school to get a Masters degree in school psychology, or social work. What I enjoy doing on my free time is learning how to play the piano and singing as well as watching Netflix and learning how to make new food recipes, especially desserts. One of my favorite books is, "The House of the Scorpion" by Nancy Farmer. My favorite food is probably Mexican food since I grew up eating Mexican food and I enjoy cooking recipes that have been passed down in my family's generations. I have not yet have had the opportunity to travel out of the country or even inside the country only to Portland Oregon, where I did a summer internship this past summer. Over winter break I did not do much other than visiting family for the holidays and staying home preparing everything for the new addition to my family.

  31. Hello everyone,
My name is Denise Adame and I’m a junior with a Spanish major and a minor in CAFS. I was born in Northridge, California and moved to Bakersfield when I was 12 years old. I am currently working for the Kern High School District and I plan to stay there after I graduate because I want to be a Spanish teacher. I love the constant human interaction and the satisfaction that comes with helping a student solve a problem. I currently work for Ridgeview High School and it is amazing how staff there focus on making students successful. I’m taking this course because I need it for one of my themes and it best fits my schedule. I don’t have a favorite book but if I had to choose one it would be All About Love. I also don’t have a favorite food because I love food but if I had to choose, my favorite meal would be The Creamy Tuscan Chicken. To whom ever is reading this, you really have to try it, it’s delicious. For winter Break I traveled to Mexico and it has been the farthest I have traveled from home. It was a great experience because we traveled by car and I passed through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and other different states in Mexico. It took my husband and I two days to arrive to our destination. Will I do it again? NO!

My name is Raven Franklin. I am originally from Los Angeles, California. My birthday is October 10th and I just turned 21. I have one younger sister named Rylee. I went to high school in Palmdale, California at Pete Knight HS. I was a cheerleader and did track and field. I relocated to Bakersfield to go to Cal State and eventually attain a B.S. in Human Biology. After graduating from CSUB, I plan to go to P.A (physician assistant) school where I will graduate with my Masters. I have always wanted to be in the medical field because I love helping people and the find the human body complex and very fascinating. My favorite hobbies outside of school are going to the movies and bowling. I also like to travel and have a bucket list pf places I would like to visit in my life. I also enjoy eating and trying new restaurants with my friends and family.

In the future, I plan to get married and move to another state. I would like to move out of California because I like to adventure and I find that I adapt to new environments quickly. I plan to be a Physician Assistant in an ER. I want to work in an ER because I like the rush and uncertainty of the fast paced environment. I also find the ER intriguing because people come in with many different problems.

    Thanks for reading!

  34. Hello everyone! My name is Angela and I am a Psych major. I was born and raised in the Marshall Islands, which not many people have heard of. It is about 1500 miles southwest of Hawaii, so I am a Pacific Islander (my ethnicity is Marshallese). I lived there until 2009, and moved here to Bakersfield when I was in the middle of eighth grade. It was a rough transition. I've travelled many places. I've been to Turkey, Qatar, Australia, Palau, and Mexico. Most of those countries I travelled to in order to participate in international swim competitions. The competitions were the FINA World Swimming Championships so I was able to meet Olympic swimmers like Ryan Lochte, and I watched all of the famous Olympians swim head-to-head in person. I did all of this before I was eighteen years old (currently 20). I've definitely had my fair share of adventures! I want to be a clinical social worker so I'll be getting my Masters in Social Working. I'm taking an online class because it works with my schedule. When I graduate I will be receiving a Bachelor's of Science in Engineering Sciences with a Minor in Business Administration. I work full time at an argiculture company and I do the designing of the traveling water screens that we manufacture. My biggest passion now is cars. I am in a worldwide car club and I am part of upper leadership with roles that look over a particular group of members around the world. My cars are my pride and joy, one car that is being built strictly for shows and one that I just bought this week to get me around everywhere. I have a Honda Civic as my show car and my daily driver is a Lexus is300. The only classes I am taking this semester are this one along with a Petroleum Engineering class. These are the last two classes I need in order to graduate. I am originally from Visalia, roughly an hour north of Bakersfield. I moved out here in 2010, a few months after graduating from high school. I had initially anticipated on playing baseball for CSUB but it did not work out how I wanted it to. I don't really do anything outside of work or school besides hang out with a few friends every once in a while; I'm a homebody. I go to work throughout the week and go to class two days a week. When i do travel its typically to car shows. My first show is the day of my birthday and I will be traveling to Las Vegas to show my car at the event. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

I'm taking an online course because I've been having a bad car situation recently and I figured this course would be convenient so that I only had to go to campus every Tuesdays and Thursdays. I actually do not have a favorite book, but if anybody has any recommendations, it'd be much appreciated! I have two lovely cats and a super energetic dog; their names are Cinder, Pumpkin, and my dog Jasper. I love to cook and sleep. My favorite food is pizza, pho, pasta, Mexican food, cream cheese wontons, or really anything that does not have meat. I'm a vegetarian, so whenever I crave tacos, I go to a restaurant called Camino Real Kitchen & Tequila and I order the "not so fish tacos". They are literally so amazing. I haven't done much traveling in my life, but I do go to Mexico every now and then to visit family. I hope after college I could save up all the pennies so that I could travel everywhere I've always dreamt of going. For winter break, I did a lot of painting and drawing, stayed in a cabin at Big Bear Lake with some friends, ate a lot of new dishes, gained a few more pounds, and binge watched Netflix. I traveled to Los Angeles a few times to visit museums and new restaurants. I currently do not have a favorite book because I usually do not have time to read for pleasure. Although, in high school that Twilight series was a real hit.

    1. Hey Jessica, I never got to read the Twilight series but I did watch the movies, which I bet did no justice but they were good.

    2. rsegundo, you're right in your assumption the movies did not live up to the books. My old roommate was a Twilight nut, and said the first couple movies were decent but the ones that followed were disappointing.

  44. Hey everyone,
My Name is Rosa Segundo. I'm from Paso Robles, which is by the Central Coast. But, I recently moved to Bakersfield to attend CSUB and receive my Bachelors Degree.I am majoring in Criminal Justice with a minor in Child Development. I am taking this online course to better my writing skills as well as becoming more "tech savy". To be honest, it has been a while since I actually read a book that has caught my attention. I'm excited to read, write, and learn more from this class. A few of my favorite foods are sushi, Chinese food, but haven't yet found a good place to eat, here in Bakersfield. The furthest I've been from home would have to be New York City. I visited family a few years back. Over winter break I spent time with daughter, my family and my friends.

    1. Hello Rosa, I recently move to Paso Robles, and still attending school so I have to commute for one more semester before I graduate; except this semester since I am expecting a baby boy any day that is why this class fitted with my schedule. What do you want to do with your degree when you graduate? I love sushi too, I am actually going to Bakersfield this weekend and look forward to have Love Sushi, since there is not one around here. WOW I want to visit New York one day too!

    2. Hi Rosa! My name is Nicholas and I too love sushi.

    3. Congratulations, have you picked out a name yet? I had my daughter last year when I was enrolled in night classes, finished the semester with B's, so it can be done! :) the commute from Paso to Bakersfield seems like a lot, so I moved to Bakersfield until I get my degree. I want to start in corrections then hopefully counseling and or probation. I will have to try out Love Sushi sometime, Yangi's in downtown Paso Robles is pretty awesome too.

  46. My name is Roshaan Sriharan. My major is computer engineering, and I hope to design entertainment
products. I am taking this online class, because my home is an hour's drive from CSUB. I have a lot of favorite books. Some of these books include: the seven Harry Potter books, Great Expectations, and a lot of other British books. My favorite foods are hummus and sardines. The farthest I have traveled from home is an international flight to Central Asia. I hope to visit England and other European countries as well. This winter break, I visited Valencia, CA. I am looking forward to learning unique terms, modes, and applications of writing in this course.

  47. Hey everyone, my name is Zelina Gracia. I just transferred from Taft College. I'm majoring in Psychology. I decided to take an online class because like many of you, it best fits my schedule. The most recent book that I have read and enjoyed was The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. I have traveled to a few places during my short lifetime, but the farthest would be Honolulu, it is a very beautiful place. Over winter break I worked, sadly nothing very interesting.

  48. Hi everyone,

My name is Gracie Lopez and I was born in Bakersfield, but raised in the small city of Wasco. I'm a transfer student from Bakersfield College and I'm majoring in Criminal Justice and minoring in Sociology. I decided to take this class because it's one of the GWAR requirements, and also because as odd it may seem to other students I prefer online classes. My favorite food is pretty much anything Mexican, but I also enjoy eating pizza and hot cheetos. I can't say I have a favorite book, but I'm currently reading "Cellar" and it's pretty entertaining. The farthest I have traveled from home is to Mexico, but I wish I can someday travel to places like Italy, Spain, New York, Hawaii...the list goes on. All I did this winter break was spend the most time I could with my family, my puppy, and my first and only nephew at the moment. He just turned one and has completely stole my heart : )

    1. Hi Gracie,
I found myself in this course because of the GWAR requirement as well. I know a wonderful family out in Wasco and they love their little town. I have joined them for the Rose festival and the Fire Works at the high school on the fourth. I have been fortunate enough to travel quite a bit during my early 20's. I lived in Hawaii for a year on Oahu and visited New York in 2003. Both are wonderful places and I hope you get to experience them for yourself one day.

    2. Hi Jamie,

It's nice to hear that you have attended the Rose Festival and the Fire Work Show in Wasco. I haven't in a very long time, I guess because I'm more of a private person and just like to go into town to spend time with the family. Thanks for the good vibes towards my traveling wishes :)

  49. Hello, my name is Denise Alvarez. I was born in San Francisco and moved to Bakersfield at the age of five. My major is Business Administration with a concentration in Management, I transferred from BC to CSUB. I am taking this online course so that I can have more time at home with my two daughters, but I still go to campus for three other classes. My favorite book that I have read would have to be The Help, because it showed a different side of that time period that we usually don’t hear about. My favorite type of food would have to be seafood, I ate it a lot when I was growing up and still do so. The farthest I’ve traveled is to Mexico, a nice 25-hour drive from home. Over winter break I stayed in town and enjoyed not stressing over school and spending time with my daughters and boyfriend.

  50. Hello everyone,
My name is Alma Duran. I was born in Bakersfield but raised in Arvin (since Arvin has no hospital because it is a very small city). My major is Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies. I am taking an online course because it is one less class that I have to drive 25 miles to get to lol. I currently do not have a favorite book because I usually do not have time to read for enjoyment. I did read during the break but nothing that I loved. The farthest I have traveled from home (that I remember) is Santa Cruz, California. I have been to Mexico but I do not have memories of that so I'm not sure if it counts. My favorite food is anything with shrimp (cócteles, ceviche, breaded, etc). Over winter break, I went out with friends. We took a trip to Universal Studios and also got to explore the campus of UC Santa Cruz. We drove a friend back to school since her vacations were over and stayed for a couple days. I also mostly worked over winter break.

  51. Hi everyone,
My name is Jamie Juarez. I was born and raised in Bakersfield, but thanks mostly in part to the military I have had the opportunity to travel and live elsewhere. I eventually came back to this great little town of ours and started my family. I am a wife of twelve years and a mother to two. I am completing my degree in Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies and look forward to the day I can work as an educator. I have my AA degree from Taft College in Liberal Studies and transferred to Cal State Bakersfield this semester. I am a bit nervous for the change but look forward to what is to come. With my busy schedule online courses work best for me. I do have some courses on campus as well but I love the flexibility of an online course. I can't say I have a favorite book, however, I just finished Night by Elie Wiesel which was a required reading for a class I am taking. It was wonderful and I read it in just a few short hours. Highly recommend it to those of you who enjoy reading about historical events and even more particularly the Holocaust. My favorite food would have to be pasta or a pizza, but I love anything I do not have to cook at home. The farthest I have traveled from home would have to be South Korea. I spent several months there from December to May about 12 years ago. It was an experience I will never forget. Over winter break I flew to Arizona for a cheerleading competition, I rested, I cleaned, and I enjoyed my time at home without assignment deadlines. I look forward to this class and wish everyone a successful semester.

I also work full time. Whenever I'm not working or studying, I am watching movies, hanging out with friends and family, or relaxing. This winter break I didn't really do anything exciting. I used to read a lot when I was in high school so now I want to get back to it. I just bought some Ellen Hopkin books so that's where I plan to begin! I decided to take this course because I love online courses and it's because of the GWAR requirements. I'm always trying to improve my writing so I figured this class would be a big help. My favorites foods are Thai food, and soul food. Love some BBQ-ribs! The furthest I have traveled would have to be to the Bahamas as a young child on a cruise. 55. Hello everyone!! I'm Scott Benedettini and am from the Mt. Mesa/Squirrel Valley area, but was born and raised in Detroit, MI. I have also lived in Iowa, Missouri, and Texas. I am taking general ed requirements this semester to hopefully finalize my major, but as of today it is Criminal Justice w/a minor in Psych. I am very nervous about online classes because I have trouble comprehending things occasionally, but also know I want to improve my writing skills, so it is a necessary evil (haha). My favorite book is Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, along with Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, and a series regarding the US involvement in Iraq after Desert Storm, written by Thomas Ricks. The first is named "Fiasco" and the second book is named "The Gamble", and I await the third book, if he every writes it.

I was a chef for 15 years, and like a lot of different types of food, but being Greek and Italian, those are my favorite types of cuisine.

I am a late bloomer, and decided at 46 to return to school, and finish unfinished business from the first time I went down in flames. I am transfer student from Cerro Coso CC, and worked very hard to meet the IGETC Transfer requirements. Though it was a very tough grind, finishing my requirements in 3 1/2 years, the long and hard struggle mentally, physically, and financially makes the prize of getting my IGETC all the sweeter. I look forward to having a great spring semester at my new university, and will value and cherish this experience
My winter break was spent recovering from a full knee reconstructive surgery. I was chasing and playing with my dog Riley, lost my balance, fought falling down, and hyperextended my knee. I demolished the LCL and ACL, completely tore the PCL, and then toss in meniscus and cartilage damage/repair. Long and short; 15-18 months physical therapy/rehab before being back to 100%. I am looking forward to being able to use the Student Athletic Facility in the p/t rehab the process.

One memorable thing that happened this winter break was I got engaged :) My favorite book would have to be Mansfield Park by Jane Austen. I absolutely love Jane Austen and everything during that period. I've read all of Jane Austen's books and seen all of the movies. When it comes to food I love to try new things! My favorite right now would probably be Italian food right now. I love to write so I am very excited to be able to write in this class as many of my accounting classes don't require essays.

  60. A warm and late hello to everyone, I am Nelly Moreno and I am from Bakersfield, CA. My major is psychology and my minor is child development. One of the reasons I am taking an online course is because I wanted to give it a try. This is my first online class and I like the fact that we do not have to meet weekly. Currently I am reading The Art of Racing in The Rain by Garth Stein and so far I am in love. This novel is clothed in humor, wisdom, love, tragedy and the best part is that it is narrated by a dog. My favorite type of food is Italian. Mexico is the farthest I have traveled from home. During break I did a lot of bowling, I believe I have grown an obsession with the sport. Some of my interests are photography, films, the human brain, bowling and beer. Much luck to everyone and may you all have a great journey.

GREETINGS AND BASIC COURSE INFO

!!!!NO MEETING THIS SATURDAY!!!! (we will meet later in the semester)

EMAIL: bschmoll@csub.edu

Greetings,

This course has some weekly assignments that you must keep up on. There are also a few other papers and books to read throughout the semester. But if you keep up with the weekly assignments on here, your writing will improve and you will put yourself in a great position to do well in this class!

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline(Saturday) each week. Furthermore, if you are in the habit of writing everything on Saturday you will not receive full credit. Why? There would be no time for others to interact with your writing. Write early; write often! Right? Right!

HERE IS THE WORK THAT MUST BE COMPLETED EACH WEEK...

FIRST, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

SECOND, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

THIRD, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS IN PART THREE EACH WEEK.
