WEEK TWO BLOG ENTRY
GREETINGS AND BASIC COURSE INFO
!!!!NO MEETING THIS SATURDAY!!!! (we will meet later in the semester)
EMAIL: bschmoll@csub.edu
Greetings,
This course has some weekly assignments that you must keep up on. There are also a few other papers and books to read throughout the semester. But if you keep up with the weekly assignments on here, your writing will improve and you will put yourself in a great position to do well in this class!
These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline(Saturday) each week. Furthermore, if you are in the habit of writing everything on Saturday you will not receive full credit. Why? There would be no time for others to interact with your writing. Write early; write often! Right? Right!
HERE IS THE WORK THAT MUST BE COMPLETED EACH WEEK...
FIRST, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.
SECOND, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.
THIRD, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS IN PART THREE EACH WEEK.
I personally have eaten a lot of stuff but I've never heard of a fried grilled cheese???? Where can I can I get one of those. Anyways I've eaten fried cockroaches from Mexico, I know a little disturbing but hey I wasn't going to lose 10,000 pesos I swallowed those cockroaches and then I puke all over my cousins face the one who had dare me and beat me that money that I couldn't do it. Believed it or not it kind of tasted like chicken I know it's bad but I kind of liked it so I decided to eat three more juts this second time around I added tapatio sauce and boy they were very delicious. Anyways I would do it again one thing I swore I would never do is eat a fried rat? My cousin dare me to eat a fried rat I was like hell no!!!!! Anything but that but I dared him to eat and he did 5 hours later he was in the E.R. I laugh so hard I kind of felt bad for him. Anyways I am a little dare devil I've never turned down a challenged except for the fried rat. Ever since then my stomach has been very sensitive so I try to watch what I put in my mouth because at this point in my like everything and I mean everything gets me sick. Would I ever eat fried cockroaches nope, well depends how much are they trying to pay me. That’s a big maybe.
ReplyDeleteha! tapatio makes everything better!
DeleteIt pretty much does ha! if it doesn't have tapatio then it wont be good at all. ha!
DeleteEw, cockroaches, rats? As I said, what is good in some places definitely forbidden on others. You should participate in this TV show Fear Factor, I think you will have fun and who knows, maybe you’ll win the big prize.
DeleteOh no Marisol I am older and my stomach doesn't take a lot no more almost everything gets me sick so I doubt it I wouldn't do it again. HA! NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!
DeleteI agree, the older we get, our stomach gets more sensible!
DeleteMarisol yes it's human nature and well we can't do nothing about it but just let it happen HA!

ReplyDeleteThis a tough question for me. I have not tried anything that sounds strange to eat. From the question given, I know that I will not ever try a cow heart from Peru. It sounds gross and eating a heart does not sound good at all! I know that I will not try ants from Columbia either. It does not sound delicious! I usually only eat food that I know I'm going to like. There is one food that I will not eat again, because I'm allergic to it. It is shrimp. I was young when my parents realized that I was allergic to it. Ever since that situation, I have not tried it anymore. I also have not ate beef jerky. I see a lot of people it, but the smell of it has not pleased me to eat it. Maybe someday I will try it.
ReplyDeleteHi Emily Quintero, so I have to relate with you on the part of the beef jerky. I too have not tried beef jerky and I really dislike the smell of it. I have no desire in ever trying it. It sucks that you are allergic to shrimp and I say that only because that is my favorite type of seafood! Do you remember if you liked the taste of shrimp when you had it at the time?
DeleteThe best beef jerky is deer jerky!
DeleteHi Ariana, it is so funny how you dislike the smell of beef jerky too! I can't remember the taste of shrimp, but I'm sure it is delicious! Because it is a lot of people's favorite seafood dish.
DeleteDevon that is good to know!
Well Emily you and I have something in common I cant eat shrimp either, but that doesn't stop me from eating it either way it gets me sick to my stomach but I can't put it down.
DeleteHi Emily!
DeleteI totally agree with you on the beef jerky. I also think it smells bad and because of that I never dare to eat it.
Joaquin- That is funny how you can't put down shrimp even though you can't eat it.
DeleteAriana- I thought I was the only one, but I was wrong!
Emily I am daredevil lol HA!
DeleteThe strangest thing I have ever eaten is a lamb's brain, tongue, and eyeballs. My favorite part of those three would have to be the brain. The first time I tried it was a few years ago in Mexico. Ever since then, I enjoyed the taste very much. My dad then started to make some at home only for special occasions because he too loves lamb along with most of my family. For some of you who are wondering how it is made is by seasoning the parts of the animal, and then it gets cooked it in the oven for several hours. I know it might sound weird or disgusting but it actually is really good!
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that I have eaten which people might also find strange is the intestines of a cow that have been cleaned, boiled, and grilled. This is typically in Mexican cuisine known as "tripas", they are used as filings for tacos. I have to say that these are indeed my favorite kind of Mexican tacos.
Brain is pretty crazy. It reminds me of Silence of the Lambs. No thank you lol
DeleteWow, you are an adventurous eater! I don't think I could handle that, as delicious as it may be.
DeleteWhy is it that we try the weirdest food or appetizers in Mexico because I also did tried fried cockroaches in Mexico, I say if you want to eat weird stuff go to Mexico sky the limit out there. But brain sounds interesting to eat, tripas are good if you eat them as tacos with the salsa verde, cilantro, onion, and of course a drop or two of tapatio.
DeleteHey Joaquin, yeah there is something about the food in Mexico that is just simply delicious! But I honestly do not know about trying fried cockroaches or any type of insect.
DeleteHa! your right Ariana Mexican food is the best, but I was dare to eat those cockroaches would I do it again uhm? I highly doubt it maybe for the right amount of dollars.
DeleteThat sounds interesting Ariana. Being mexican we have always eaten lamb or goat at family gatherings, but I've personally have eaten parts like the brain and eyes. My dad is the one who usually enjoys those parts. I stick to the actual meat.
DeleteHi Ariana, the lambs brain is something I want to try in the future. I can't imagine what it will taste like. haha
DeleteHi Ariana, I personally agree with you lamb is really good and also those tacos de trips (gut). It is also true what our classmate said about in Mexico people try the weirdest foods. I don't think I have every tried anything weird here in U.S.
DeleteHi Adriana,
DeleteI agree tripas are bomb, but in my case they have to be a little fried. The lamb brain sounds crazy though! I know they sell tacos of cow brain right, called sesos? My parents eat those, but I've never had the courage to try them.
I have not thought about this for years, but I would have to say ants were the strangest for me. They were not from Columbia, but the Virgin Islands, and they were ants in any case. Looking back at this experience, the strangest thing was that I did this not as a dare, or bet, but out of pure curiosity because of the smell of this type of ant, similar to fire ants. After the first one, I found the taste appealing, so as children would do, I ate more. The problem with eating live ants is that at the other end of the abdomen lies a pair of jaws that packs a wallop. That was enough to bring that experience to an end, and deter future taste testing.
ReplyDeleteoh my!
DeleteOmg, they were alive? They didn’t crawl back up? I agree with you, from Columia or Virgin Islands they are ants, but alive? That’s animal cruelty (jiji).
DeleteThey are alive until you chew on them. Just chew quickly.
DeleteNo thanks, not interested.
Delete- What other insect are you curios to try?
DeleteThe strangest food I have ever eaten were snakes, frogs, and Chinese mystery snails. I ate those food when I was living in China as a child. The snakes were prepared by deep frying. I remember them being extremely crunchy and salty and disgusting. The frogs were prepared by steaming. The frog legs almost taste like a small chicken leg if you imagine hard enough. The most disgusting part of the frogs were the skin because it was slimy and had a green-brownish color which appeared unappetizing. I remember trying to discreetly peel the skin off, only to be caught by my parents who would yell at me to eat the skin because it was “good for your body”. I despised eating snakes and frogs. However, I loved eating the snails. They were prepared by roasting with a certain type of sauce, and you eat them by sucking their bodies out of their shells and into your mouth. It sounds horrific, but they were extremely delicious. If I ever visit China I would probably eat the snails again, but never the snakes and frogs. Also, I would never eat eggplants because I cannot stand the taste and texture of them, especially the skin. Fish skin is another item that is hard to swallow. The only skin I like is chicken skin.
ReplyDeleteHi Yang. You make the snails sound delicious. I’ve never had them, but I will consider it if I visited China and had them under your supervision. Was the sauce spicy, savory, or what would you describe it as?
DeleteHey Yang,
DeleteWow! you are very brave! I have a phobia for snakes so I don't think I would ever be able to eat them! However, I have heard they are delicious from certain people. But from your experience I don't believe it so much anymore! Would you recommend it?
Hey Albion! The sauce was spicy and just lightly salted enough that it keeps you craving more and more. I recall eating pounds after pounds of them with my parents when I was younger. If you ever visit China you should totally give it a try!
DeleteHey Deisy! I would certainly not recommend the snakes if you have a phobia for them. To put something you are deathly afraid of inside your mouth is an experience I cannot imagine!
DeleteIve actually had fried frog legs before. My friends mom cooked some for dinner and i mistook them for chicken wings lol it was actually pretty tasty !
DeleteHi Yang! Wow you have tried some crazy foods. I hope I can become more open to trying new and interesting foods like that.
DeleteHi Yang, I think I would pass on those crazy foods you stated but I have heard that frog meat is really good maybe I should consider on tasting it.
DeleteWhen it comes to food, I've had a positive mindset with trying new things. I'm barely starting to eat seafood so I could technically say all of that is strange to me because it is new but I won't use that as a cop out. I've had the chocolate insects from a store in Pismo, I'm sure everyone has at some point. My latest has been oyster but I didn't really taste it because I put too much lime juice. I know, I'm boring. I love to eat so it's hard to come across something I don't like.
ReplyDeleteHi Devon,
DeleteSeafood is great, I suggest you try sushi and calamari. You will not regret it at all.
I also did not like oysters when I tried them because of the slimy taste.
Hey Devon, oysters are really good with a little bit of lime and tapatio. Oysters do taste weird at fist so most people don't chew them when they eat cause they do taste odd.
DeleteHey devon, I know you are just starting to try seafood but you should try crawfish. Once you get past the part where you have to crack off the head, it is really good and flavorful. There is a really good seafood place called crab in a bag in downtown bakersfield. You should give it a try!
DeleteThank you guys for your recommendations! I have had sushi before and it was pretty good. My go-to is definitely shrimp because I've had it the most but I also really enjoy crab. Too bad it's so expensive!
DeleteI generally try to avoid eating anything too odd. I'm a picky eater anyway, so I never have trouble staying away from strange meats and insects. However, when I was studying abroad in Costa Rica, I had the opportunity to try escargot. My peers and I did it as a group, so I couldn't back out (as much as I wanted to). It was a greenish color and looked particularly disgusting. I hesitated, but was surprised when I realized it didn’t taste like a snail they had plucked off the ground. It tasted mostly of the garlic butter sauce it was cooked in and I was very impressed. I’m not sure if I’d have it again because of the texture and chewiness, but I’m glad a branched out and tried something different.
ReplyDeleteHey Kimberly,
DeleteI think is awesome that you had the opportunity to try something different while visiting another country! Now you have a memory that will always remind you of your stay in Costa Rica.
I imagine the texture of a snail to be very interesting. I wouldn't be able to do it
Delete- What food would you most compare it to, in regards to texture?
DeleteI've never exactly had anything exotic, nor am I really that daring enough to try such weird things. Thinking about food I would never eat either is quite hard, but if I absolutely had to choose something, most likely it would be dog. I've heard things about dog: it's stringy, it's close to goat meat, and it maybe tastes like lamb. I've definitely had all of those, but I don't think I would go through with eating a dog. There's definitely some sort of mental barrier that would fill me with guilt if I did it, but apparently it's quite popular in Korea. I would not say that it's not a weird thing. I'm not culturally insensitive to say such a thing. It's as much as someone would feign from eating lamb or sheep. If anything, I'd say this question makes me want to try something weird during the semester. Maybe I'll like it, maybe I won't. Who knows? I guess I'd just have to be more daring.
ReplyDeleteMichael your right, I would never eat a dog either they're are to precious, kind, and loveable to eat I couldn't do it I love dogs and I'm against any animal cruelty. I think anyone who chooses to eat a dog has some type of mental problem to be honest is the same as eating a cat I personally don't like cats but I will never eat them either.
DeleteI think we find it difficult to accept the idea of eating a dog because on our culture they are domesticated pets. I love all kinds of red meat, yet other countries such as Hindu find a cow to be a religious symbol. I love to go to Tijuana and eat tacos, people said they are made of dog meat, if that's the case, dogs are delicious.

ReplyDeleteHi Michael I would have to definitely agree with you because I am a huge dog lover. I heard some stuff about the way it taste as well but I still can't believe people actually eat them.
DeleteI agree, I don't think I could ever stomach the idea of eating dog. Maybe it's because they're so domesticated in the US and, like you said, the mental barrier would be hard to overcome. There are plenty of other foods out there to try though!
DeleteI have never tried any of the foods mentioned above, in fact, I had absolutely no idea they existed. But even if they were available to me I do not think I would ever eat them. When it comes to food I will eat almost anything, I love food! Well as long as I am familiar with. However, one food I would never eat is chocolate dipped insects or any type of insect candy. If anyone has ever visited Pismo Beach I am sure they know what I'm talking about. They have all kinds of candy insects; they go from crickets to worms to the most exotic types of insects. I personally have a huge fear for worms so I definitely would never eat them. In fact, just the thought of putting any kind of insect in my mouths sort of scares me. But I will say it is fascinating to see all the diversity that exists when it comes to food and how foods that may be odd to some of us are common to others.
ReplyDeleteI agree, there is no way I would voluntarily eat any kind of insect or bug because they freak me out!
DeleteDeisy, you should try to eat things that sounds strange you might end up liking them if you only tried.
DeleteJade,
Deletetotally agree! they are very freaky
Neida,
DeleteYou are right, I wouldn't mind trying something different just not the insects! they freak me out!

ReplyDeleteThe strangest things I have ever eaten are cow's eyeballs, tongue, and brains. My favorite out of those three I'd have to say is the tongue, specially when my mom makes tacos with it. Just imagine the tongue sliced into small pieces, on a homemade tortillas, and topped with onion, cilantro, and a spicy sauce. I can eat up to six of those tacos on a good day. =)
ReplyDeleteThe eyeballs are gross and I would never eat them again! I am not daring enough to try things like frog legs or ants. Just the thought of it grosses me out. I think a lot has to do with the way I think of the food before eating it, but even with a positive attitude I don't think I would be able to make myself eat something too exotic.
Hi Viridiana wow all I have to say is that you are a champ. That is pretty strange well maybe the cows eyeballs and the brain because the lengua is pretty common. What made you want to try the eyeballs and the brain?
DeleteHi Claudia,
Deletewell my mother used to make "cabeza" all the time when we lived in Mexico, so I kind of did not have a choice. lol
Hey Viridiana,
DeleteI have also tried cow's tongue and it is delicious! However, I had no idea people ate the brains and the eyes. I don't think I would ever eat them though. How was your experience with the eyes and brains?
I'm so impressed! I don't think I could even take one bite of an eyeball without throwing up. Sometimes I wish I could be more daring.
DeleteNo way in hell I could have ever tried the brain and eye ball. Hmmmmm, maybe if tequila shots were involved prior,....on second thought, no.
DeleteScott, maybe a bottle of tequila before eye balls and brain, then everything will taste the same.
DeleteThe strangest thing I have ever eaten has been fried calamari. Fried calamari is a type of squid from the Mediterranean and it is cooked deep fried. It is actually vary delicious and remarkably best when eaten with a sweet and sour type of sauce. At first, I was skeptical to eat squid. One day I was invited to a Japanese restaurant and I was afraid that I was not going to like anything. However, my friend made a very interesting point, he said “well how do you know you don’t like it if you have never tried it?”. Eventually, I started being more opened minded with different types of food after my friend made that suggestion. I enjoy seafood a lot and have never been grossed out about it. I really enjoy lime cooked shrimp, fish, and crab. I have never eaten any other meat type of meat other than chicken, beef, fish, or pork. I will not say I won’t try other culinary oddities because I don’t find any justifiable excuse other than fearing I won’t like it. I simple question that norms our society and caregivers emphasize upon us. I believe I became accustom to eating what my parents and the society I live in eats. However, say I was born in a different part of the world, where other types of meats are the norm I figure that’s the type of meat or food I would be eating. I simply like to look at things from a different perspective because it allows me to understand a little more about humanity.
ReplyDeleteI love fried calamari! Most people I know don't like it and I think it has a lot to with what you mentioned. Since that's not something our area is super familiar with, many people won't even give it a chance.
DeleteI also love fried calamari. I remember the first time I tried it was on a field trip my middle school Spanish class went on to eat tapas. One of the many sides was fried calamari. I was naive and thought they were onion rings and didn't hesitate to eat them, my teacher ran up and said something like "Sean really likes the calamari" some of the classmates made disgusted faces but they are tasty. It's good you are open to seafood there is a lot of it to eat.
DeleteHi Melissa,
DeleteCalamari is delicious!
I too used to be very skeptical to eat squid! Now every time I go to a restaurant, I order Calamari and squid as appetizer!
oh fried calamari, I strongly suggest to try it at Toros. The different dip that they provide you is extremely amazing. It will make your taste buds jump.
DeleteI am definitely not one to think strange foods sound fun or interesting to try. In fact, trying new things and being adventurous is something I need to work on. I do know one of the weirdest things I have tried is cow tongue, and after reading other responses, it's not even that weird. I was at a birthday party and there was a taco truck that had three choices of meats: chicken, carne asada, and lengua. I knew what lengua was (cow tongue), and that I'd never had it or wanted to try it, but it just looked so good! In my mind I was thinking how much I love tacos so why not eat it... so I did. That is by far the weirdest thing I have tried and it turned out I actually like it. You would think that made me feel at ease about trying new foods, but no I still stick to my favorites every time I go out to eat.
ReplyDeleteHi Jade I agree that trying new things is a good thing and that is also something that I need to work on. Its hard at times when you are not sure of it.I enjoy tacos too how was the lengua tacos? I have always been curious but to scared to taste it.
DeleteJade, you should have someone serve you different type of things to eat without them letting you know what it is until you try it. You might like it.
DeleteLengua is probably my favorite choice of taco. For my family, that is probably their number one choice. Although we rarely eat it from time to time because it does take quite a while to prepare it.
DeleteI don’t recall ever eating anything that was strange or odd. There are things that I would probably try but I’m not sure if I were put in that situation if I would try it. There is a food that I would never eat and that is escargot (French for snail), this to me is so gross. When I attended a French class I was introduced to this food and I must say that it was the grossest thing I have ever seen and heard of. But there are people that enjoy eating them that is bizarre. I heard that escargot is high in protein and low in fat but I still wouldn’t touch or taste them. Another food that I wouldn’t want to ever try is frog legs. I heard from a lot of people that they taste like chicken and that is hard to believe, but still wouldn’t try it. I not a big meat eater so there are meats that I wouldn’t eat. Eating strange things are scary sometimes because you are not sure what it is in it or where it came from. If it was a deep grill cheese from the Kern County Fair I would try it. I have a friend who went to the filipins recently and he had tried a boiled baby duck which is called Balut, I was shocked to hear about this because that is out of the norm. I have never heard about this before, so Balut would be something else I would not try.
ReplyDeleteClaudia,
DeleteI totally agree, I don't think I would ever be able to put it in my mouth specially because snails sort of freak me out!
I don't typically eat strange foods. In fact, I hate trying new foods especially when it comes to meat. I have my favorites and I always stick with them. Those are just typically chicken, turkey, and occasionally beef. I was raised to not eat pork or any shell fish so I suppose that's where some of my pickiness comes from. Since I'm so picky I don't think I would ever try something like monkeys, snakes, or alligators. If I was in the jungle or trapped on an island and had to catch and prepare my own meat, I would probably just starve to death. I would absolutely never eat tongue or liver. I think those are the grossest, most cringe worthy part of an animal you can eat. I also don't understand mussels either; I suppose the main issue with those is the texture. They are so slimy and chewy. I would love to try more exotic fruits and vegetables. I also wouldn't be opposed to trying the deep fried grilled cheese from the kern county fair.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you! I only eat chicken, turkey, and beef so I especially wouldn't try any new meats.
DeleteI have eaten several things that sound strange but to me they are completely normal. I have tried intestines, liver and kidney of a pig. I have also tried tongue, liver and the kidney of a cow. Also I have ate goat meat and Gizzard. I find everything normal since in my family it's part of what we eat. The tongue of the cow is used for tacos. I ate goat meat as a filling for tacos. However, I did not like the goat meat it smelled really bad. I wont eat that again. The rest of the stuff I mentioned are really good they sound strange but you will never know what's good if you don't try it. I will eat just about anything as long as it doesn't have a weird smell. The goat meat smelled really bad but my brother-in-law convinced me to eat it, since he said it was really good. After I took a bite I wanted to throw up because of the smell.
ReplyDeleteI think the strangest thing I have ever eaten would have to be fish eyes. It doesn’t sound that crazy but as a child I loved them, I don’t think I could bring myself to eat them again as an adult. My love of seafood began when I was a child because of my parents. They were born in Mexico in a town close to the beach so seafood became a big part of my diet and really culture. Eating raw shrimp “cooked” with lemon is my favorite in Spanish it’s called aguachile, my mouth waters just from thinking about it. Crab legs is also something I like to eat, not that strange but growing up in San Francisco it was easy for my family to get it fresh and it was delicious. The type of food that I would never want to eat is any type of insects, even if they are covered in chocolate. Also another food, I think from China that eggs with unborn baby chicks are eaten, I would never ever touch that.
ReplyDeleteI agree seafood is so good. Aguachiles is one of my favorite dishes to eat also. I would be open to trying a dried cricket but any other bug would be a definite no. I completely agree with the egg part, looking at it and imagining someone eat it makes me want to throw up.
DeleteHi Denise,
DeleteI could never bring myself to eat fish eyes, I would be too creeped out lol
I have also loved seafood since I was a child because my parents ate it so much. Reading your post has made me crave some aguachiles.
Hi Denise,
DeleteI love you that you have eaten fish eyes! They are amazing. Since I grew up in the islands, eating fish eyes was very common and we would often eat them raw. I'm glad someone else enjoys fish eyes as much as I do!
I love that you* have eaten fish eyes!
DeleteThe strangest thing I have ever eaten would have to be pig intestines and blood. I was attending a family party five years ago at my now wife, then girlfriends parents house. Her mother had made a specialty stew called Dinuguan it's a regional stew from the Ilocano region of the Philippines. The main ingredients in it feature pork intestines as well as being stewed in pork blood. I am not someone who turns his nose up at food that is offered to him nor am I afraid to try new foods from various parts of the world so I did eat it, it wasn't bad or disgusting just different. It had a very rich taste and was very fatty, and traditionally served at parties. I have only eaten this stew once and that was more than enough for me.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if you had chitterlings? I think its like a mixture of small and large intestines from the pig. Either way thats a pretty crazy food to eat if you ask me! cool.
DeleteI have never had chitterlings but I would be interested to try them. I forgot to add that the stew turns a blackish color from the blood in it.
DeleteI wouldn't even know how stews with primarily blood would work out. That definitely leaves me curious and I'll have to look more into Dinuguan.
DeleteOn the topic of strange foods, I will never try oysters. Oysters seem like a flavorless and disgusting food to eat. I have never actually tried them but the smell of oysters and the look of them do not look too appealing if you ask me. I'm really not that kind of person to try a bunch of new foods so I try to stay at the local Mexican food restaurants in Bakersfield. I saw some of the other posts above and you couldn't pay me to eat cow tongue, eyeballs, or anything of that nature. It would probably make me throw up! Although I do love learning about different cultures and what different kinds of food people eat around the world. This is very interesting to me and I even watch youtube videos on this kind of stuff sometimes. I found everyones posts so far really interesting and enjoy reading them.
ReplyDeleteHey maybe the look of the oysters is what grosses you out about them. I enjoy taking the oyster out of the shell it's a fun experience. Fish tacos are my favorite know any places in Bakersfield that have good ones?
DeleteThat's how I feel about oysters too! The texture and look of them just grosses me out.
DeleteI thought the very same thing until I tried Oysters Rockefeller which consists of oysters on the half-shell that have been topped with various other ingredients (often parsley and other green herbs, a rich butter sauce and bread crumbs) and are then baked or broiled. Some versions I have tried incorporated bacon crumbles, and liked that the best.
DeleteJason,
DeleteI totally agree, I'm glad I am not the only person who thinks oysters look disgusting! Just by looking at them they do not look enjoyable! plus their texture grosses me out!
Well, this is hard to answer because what it could be normal for some people, it may be disgusting for others. I’m willing to try new things every time I get the chance, last year when I went to Zihuantanejo I ate roasted crickets, they were okay because the lady gave them to me with lemon and salsa Tapatio. My friend from Guanajuato offered me fried frog legs, I had tried dry snake (jerky style), and cow eyeball tacos. All I can say is that I was able to chew, some tasted better than other but I’m not on the mood to eat those foods again. One time I went with my family for lunch to a Chinese food buffet, I don’t like seafood but I was willing to try an octopus. I’m not sure if it was steamed or boiled, I just remember trying to get a bite to the head, I was not able to closed my mouth, it felt like a rubber ball, it was cold, slimy, and I had the sensation that the thing was moving in my mouth and the little legs were climbing on my chicks, I couldn’t open my mouth to spit it out but I was not able to swallow it either so my husband stuck his fingers in my mouth and took it out, it was so embarrassing, now is kind of funny though.
ReplyDeleteHi Marisol, how did snake taste?
DeleteHi Brianna, I don't even remember. I could related the small of it to fish, since I do not like fish, you can imagine the rest.
DeleteHi marisol, the cow eyeballs sound gross but I am willing to try that in the future! haha
DeleteOmar, I eat them in tacos, maybe cooked different will taste better. Enjoy them!
DeleteThe strangest food I've eaten is rather a difficult question. This is because what might be enjoyable to some, might be completely disgusting to others. Me and my dad and uncles love to go hunting. So I've eaten elk, bear, deer, wild boar, rabbits, and plenty of other animals. So some might think that they would never eat bear or rabbits, but I found them to be quite tasteful. I've found that if you were to give someone a piece of this meat and not actually tell them what it is, they would never know the difference. Although, if you do tell them what it is they get disgusted as if they weren't just enjoying it two seconds ago. I find that rather funny. Although the strangest parts I have eaten from one of these animals would have to be a deer's heart. I didn't even know that it was the heart until my dad handed me a piece and told me what it was. It wasn't that bad.
ReplyDeleteI found this question hard to answer as many other students also did. I have eaten a wide variety of foods and tend never to say no when introduced to something new. Some foods I would stay away from would most likely be insects. They don't look or sound appetizing. When it comes to meat I enjoy most of them however, when I travel to Poland sausage comes in many forms. Blood sausage in particular sounds gross but it actually is quite great. Blood sausage is probably one of the weirdest things I have tried along the lines of deer, and elk. Traveling to different parts of the world it is easy to notice how different people eat. One thing I noticed is that instead of being afraid to try something its nice and respectful to try everything. Rarely have I ever found myself in a situation that I didn't like the food.
ReplyDeleteHi Joshua, Blood from what animal? I have eaten cow's blood in Mexico City, I think they dried it first and then make like a sausage as well. We call it"moronga", we fried with lots of onion and serrano chiles, it's delicious!!
DeleteIm sure it was pig or maybe even duck. Now quite sure but it was surprisingly good!
DeleteThe strangest thing I have eaten would probably be tacos de lengua (tongue tacos), and tripas (intestines). I have to say I did not like the tongue tacos they tasted weird to me. I do however like the tripas, when I first tried tripas I refused to try them but then my brothers told me that they tasted good and that they were not bad. I gave in and tried them and ended up liking them. When it comes to trying new foods I’m open to it as long as I know what I am eating. Now just because I am willing to try new foods does not mean I will try everything. One of the foods I would not try is rabbit, turtle, snails, and armadillo. I would not try rabbit because I use to have a pet rabbit when I was younger, and I don’t know it wouldn’t feel right. My mom told me that in Mexico they eat turtles and armadillos which I found strange and I would never even think about eating those two animals. As for snails when I took French in high school my teacher told us that eating snails is a common thing in France, she said if we ever have a chance to eat them we should because they taste good but I don’t think I would ever want to try them.
ReplyDeleteMy sister had a pet rabbit before and she feels the same way! She gets upset if someone talks about eating rabbit.
DeleteHi Jennifer,
Deletetongue tacos certainly do not sound appetizing, but I would have to admit that if I didn't know that they were tongue tacos, I probably would eat them. I love tacos! I would have to say the same for the tripas. If I know what body part I am eating of an animal, it will take more prodding for me to try out the food. If I don't know then I would probably end up eating it. That is very interesting. Maybe one day I'll work up the guts to try those foods!
Hi Jennifer, I don't know if I would be able to have snails like the French people but I would say yes to the tongue and gut tacos.

ReplyDeleteI haven't ate anything too out of the ordinary. I'm mainly a veggie person and don't like seafood too much. Therefore, I would never try oysters. The look of them and the texture grosses me out. I would never eat snail or cow tongue either. They may taste good, but the thought and the texture is unappealing to me. One of my friends loves cow tongue and oysters. One time we were at the beach and he tried fried oysters, which I had never heard of. I won't try new meats because I only eat chicken, turkey, and beef, but I'll always try new vegetables and fruits. Although, I have tried deer when I was younger because my Dad didn't tell me what kind of meat it was. I didn't like it though. One of my coworkers is Filipino and she makes banana egg rolls. I'm not sure if that's what they're called, but they taste amazing! I always enjoy learning about the different foods other cultures prepare and eat.
ReplyDeleteHi Brianna! What is your favorite vegetable and fruit? How was the texture and taste of the deer?
DeleteHi Brianna,
DeleteI also get grossed out with the texture of oysters. Wish I could try them though lol
Hi Yang! My favorite vegetables are asparagus, onions, and tomatoes. The deer was slimy and had a different taste to it. I could definitely tell it wasn't beef.
DeleteHi Alma, I wonder if you tried them if you would like them. Do you like other seafood?
DeleteHi Brianna, I too am more of a veggie person and slimy texture does not seem appetizing to me either so I could really relate to your post! What do the banana egg rolls taste like though? Sounds interestingly delicious.
DeleteHi Azucenna :) the banana egg rolls are really good! They don't have egg in them, but they look like egg rolls haha. They're just sliced bananas in the egg roll shell with powdered sugar. They have a very sweet taste to them
DeleteWow I really want to try one now. Sounds like some yummy desert!

ReplyDeleteThe strangest food I have eaten is Calamari aka fried squid. For my high school senior pictures, my parents paid for me to go on a excursion with a photography company in my home town. One of the places on the Excurson was a private beach in Malibu. The trip was super fun and I took alot of great pictures for my portfolio. After the photo session, the company took all the kids on the trip to a restaurant on the beach. Instead of each of us ordering separate entrees, the supervisor ordered a variety platters so we could all share. When all the food came out it smelled and looked delicious. Without any hesitation, I placed a little of everything on my plate. As i began to taste the Calamari, i noticed a weird texture in my mouth. I immediately asked what i was eating and the waiter replied "fried squid". I went into complete shook and spit it out my mouth! After my friends calmed me down I tried it again. Surprisingly, it tastes pretty good beside the stingy texture of the tentacles but after a while you get usd to eat. Alot of people says it reminds them of chicken strips. I disagree lol it is definitely an acquired taste. Now whenever go to seafood resturants I order Calamari and it is best with ranch or honey mustard. I recommend some of you try it!
ReplyDeleteBeing Greek/Italian I grew up eating calamari. Fried calamari with a lemon butter sauce on the side is so good. I am glad to see that you gave it a second try, and liked it!! The rubbery texture does take getting used to for some, but once you get past that, it's so good!! Though I gotta say you're killing me by using ranch or honey mustard, lol. Next time, if possible, try it with some lemon squeezed over it, or a marinara sauce. You won't be disappointed.
DeleteHi Raven, one of my friends had me try calamari and didn't tell me what it was. Surprisingly, I really liked it! Even after she told me what it was. Now I order it when I go to seafood restaurants also
DeleteHey Scott,
DeleteThanks for the tip! Ill definitely try with a little lemon next time.
I actually love duck! M grandmother cooks it all the time around he holidays

ReplyDeleteAs I read the review, I could tell the review was going to be a mixed bag. The line that struck me, as well we sets the tone and groundwork for the rest of the review is "None of this is a problem in and of itself — good food is good! — but you might feel mildly let down if you believed the pre-opening press, which promised cooking inspired by an earlier era." Being a former chef, I believe that sentence wraps the entire review in a sentence. If the reader did not want to know finite details, that line sums it up so the reader does not have wait until the last paragraph, or last sentence, for the writer to give his/her conclusion. I think what made this review so critical on details was the fact a small king's ransom was paid for the 7 course meal, and this leaves the door open for one to be critical. I must admit that when I go to an upscale restaurant, I expect perfection from the chef all the way to the bussers just as I expected from my staff. Be it In-n-Out, The Mark, Bento Box, The Padre Hotel, or Jack-in-the-Box, one has certain expectations set to the level of restaurant one dines at. Based on the review, IF I went there, I would heed the advise of the reviewer and order ala carte.
Since I see that I answered the wrong question because I was on the wrong page...
ReplyDeleteBlog Entry; Take Two!!
When I was learning to be a chef, I realized I would have to put my fussy ways aside and learn to be open to trying new and different things, and the adventure began. Though before I make mention of the things I have tried, I do not know that they are so much strange as they are just different from what is offered in most restaurants, and different from what I was accustomed to growing up.
I have tried elk, ostrich, bison, escargot, and ox tail, just to mention some of the things that quickly come to mind. That being said, if I had to pick a "strangest food" for me at that time, I would have to say it took a lot of prodding to get me to open up and finally try sashimi and sushi, which I NEVER, EVER would have done before my cooking days. I have to say I love, love, love it!! Though, I do not care for a version of it that is served in a seaweed cone and topped with salmon eggs. I was served it as the chef's personal gesture to our table, and I had to do everything within my power to control my gag reflex, so I would not insult the chef being he was standing right there, as well as embarrass myself and the party I was with, but oooooooooooo was it tough.
What food would I never try? I would have to say menudo, lolol, off the top of my head. Soup made out of tripe does not appeal to me, not in the slightest.
Hi Scott,
DeleteI have to say, menudo is strange when you think about what it is made up of but it is sooooo good! Well some, not all lol
I get grossed out when thinking about it so I can only eat a small plate of it but there are so many spices in it that make it worth it.
Maybe one day I will just try the menudo broth, minus the tripas, hahaha.
DeleteHi Scott, I have also tried ostrich and bison! I had the meat on burgers and I fairly enjoyed both of them. That being said, I think I would open to trying ox tail. Sounds very unique. I'm also glad you opened up to sushi because sushi is amazing!
DeleteLove, love, love sushi with the soy/wasabi to swipe the sushi/sashimi in. If you ever have the opportunity to try a bison steak, TRY IT!! The bison tenderloin was simply to die for. What drove me to trying it was that is has twice the protein and half the fat of beef from cows. The bison burger meet can be a little dry if you over cook it because it is so lean.
DeleteThe strangest things I have ever eaten would be tacos de lengua (cow's tongue) and tripas (intestines). I have loved lengua ever since I was a kid. It's my meat of choice on mostly everything whenever I go out because it does not have huge amounts of fat. I hate meat that has a lot of fat. It grosses me out because it is so mushy. The tripas I have not had since I was around 11. They were good when I tried them but the thought of what they actually were grossed me out.
ReplyDeleteI'm not big on trying things out of my comfort zone (when it comes to food). Some things I would not eat include: blood sausage, chicken gizzards and feet, insects, escargot, liver/kidney, and oysters.
Every time I go to the buffet with my boyfriend, he gets plates full of oysters and I think to myself, "Today is going to be the day I try it," but I can never bring myself to do it. I want to try it because he really enjoys them but the texture of them grosses me out.
Hi Alma, that is so funny that you say that you're gonna try the oysters and then you don't because I do the same thing! I think ok Im going to try them and then I look at them and tell myself "next time." I still haven't tried them yet either!
DeleteHi, Alma!! I would never try lengua, but I did try barbacoa and I loved it!! After the guys at work told me it was the meat from off the cows head, I figured "eh, what's done is done," and had another barbacoa taco with the fellas, and we all had a good laugh and a great breakfast before work began.
DeleteHey Alma,
DeleteI have tried tacos de lengua and I think they are delicious! but I agree with you, I don't think I would ever eat oysters! Just the way they look grosses me out, plus I have heard lots of things that can be found in them so that is a no no for me!
Lengua is bomb.
DeleteI have not tried any strange food. The first two foods that come to my head when I read this question would be bats and turtles. I felt really disgusted when a few semesters ago, my geography professor was showing us tropical foods that people eat on the different islands and that was so nasty to see the bats. The bats were supposed to be eaten like if it was soup. Some of you may be wondering well it is just meat, but it is not! They eat the bat with everything! The had the fur, their eyeballs, their wings, teeth, brain, and everything. I think that its super nasty, unsanitary, and it is not safe. Nothing is cooked it is completely raw. You don’t know where that bat was or if it perhaps had an infection. The other item I would not eat would be turtles. I personally like turtles and my professor showed us how they killed them and it was very brutal. Since I saw how they died, I don’t think it’s fair how they had to suffer. I would not eat an animal that I like. Also, I remember our professor said that they used a lot the turtles in soup; however, they were killing so many that they became endangered. At that time, they were trying to ban the killing of those turtles so they would not go extinct. The list can go on and on, but these are two of the two foods that I would immediately say “no thank you.”
ReplyDeleteOh man, I love turtles. I can't even begin to think about eating one. I can't imagine they're very good either.
DeleteI agree Bianca and Blair I am willing to eat and experience many types of food but thinking of eating turtle does not sound appealing to me at all.
DeleteI agree that eating bats can be nasty. I also forgot to add, that I sometimes ate frozen berries and avocados, especially when the refrigerators in certain motels were not set at the right temperatures. Like I mentioned before, I was not fond of lentils, half-cooked eggs, ants, and rats. I would prefer sardines, salmon, hummus, and olives mixed together in a sandwich. I like a lot of foods, except that I am a little picky about eating avocado and egg sandwiches. I would also like to share the fact, that I used to like peanut butter, white butter, and mayonnaise sandwiches mixed together. I typically like spicy, salty, half-sweetened, and creamy foods. Do you like salty, spicy, creamy, and half-sweetened foods?
DeleteBlair and Sean- it's sad to think it is was a common food they would eat on that island.
DeleteRoshaan- I will eat salty foods, but i am not much of a fan of spicy foods. I will eat them, but i get spiced up easily. I love creamy food.
I don't think I have ever eaten something strange that I would not eat again. The only time I ate something that I was not to comfortable eating was a duck that my boss had brought for a dinner that he and his wife set up for the employees. I was not sure what it was when I served it but when I started eating it, it tasted different than other meats I had eaten, and not very good. It did not taste totally bad but it was a different texture of meat and when I found out that I was eating a rabbit it made me slightly uncomfortable. Another strange thing that I have ate although it might not be strange for many people, especially in the Hispanic culture is menudo. Menudo is a Mexican soup made with gut or little stomach of beef (yuck). I have tried it several times because I want to understand why people like it or enjoy it, because even though the menudo might have a good flavor the meat is that it had or little stomach is so nasty, that it has it's not something I would want to eat. However, there are other foods that I will never eat unless someone was paying me a lot of money to do so, like rats, cockroaches and spiders.
ReplyDeleteMenudo especially has that extra chewy meat in it that makes it a bit difficult to chew, it also has a distinct smell. I always make the mistake of menudo and realizing its not posole. Then its a sad bowl of regret. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way towards that soup.
DeleteIslia,
DeleteI have never heard of people eating duck meat!It must be strange to know one is eating duck! I don't think I would ever be able to try it! I see them more as pets rather than food!!
Yes, people in the Asian culture do like duck I guess, and yes I feel the same way. It is not the worst meat to try but definitely not something I would eat again.
DeleteAw yes some menudo come with posole beans and it makes it look very appealing, until the meat kills it.
DeleteI personally would try almost anything at least once. Especially if you don’t tell me what exactly I am eating until after. The strangest thing I have eaten was probably a deep-fried Klondike bar, because it was a mixture of sense all at once. It was hot then cold inside, buttery fried coating and chocolate vanilla. However, there are some foods in my culture that I consider normal but to others sound odd, and maybe disgusting. Lots of tacos involve various meats, and honestly some require to masticate more than others, but if I am hungry it’s going to get eaten. Taco meat involves various parts from the cow including tongue, brain, and liver. The liver isn’t exactly my favorite since it leaves behind an odd after taste. I honestly had no idea I was eating these parts until maybe five years ago. They called these body parts in Spanish, and I just never put two and two together.
ReplyDeleteHi Stephanie. It is good that you try new foods at least once and the deep-fried klondike bar sounds so good!
DeleteI would say that the strangest thing I have ever eaten was kangaroo or alligator while I was in Australia. I felt very convicted after eating kangaroo because I had just gone to a kangaroo petting zoo before we went out for dinner so I wasn't able to finish the meal. What is even worse is that kangaroo happens to be my favorite animal. I was a lot younger so I would not eat kangaroo now, but I felt so bad afterwards. The alligator that I ate was actually pretty good. It takes a lot like chicken, and chicken is my favorite, so I actually enjoyed it. Something else others may think is odd that I have eaten is snail stew and octopus. Since I grew up in the islands, we ate seafood pretty much every day. We would go out and collect our own seafood from the tidepools and whatnot. Snails were very common to eat and so were octopi. Since I grew up on this food, I love it. I love seafood, especially if it is fresh! I would say that I would never go to another country and try cooked dog or cat. I know some countries do that, but I could never bring myself to eat those two animals. I would probably also never eat all the strange delicacies that some people like like the brains, tongues, or livers of any animal.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to travel to Australia, that's awesome! I'm not sure how I would feel about eating kangaroo either, but I would try alligator. Maybe one day!
DeleteIt was a very interesting experience!
DeleteAfter reading everyone’s responses I realize I haven’t ventured too far out into the world of food. However, I saw that many people did not like/would never try oysters and that's something I actually enjoy. I tried charbroiled oysters when I was on a trip in New Orleans and they were surprisingly really good! Mind you I am an incredibly picky eater and it takes a while before I get up the courage to try new things and I thought oysters would be on the list of things I would never try, but my aunt convinced me. Also, it wasn’t like in the movies when you slurp them up or anything; you could eat these with a fork so that took away part of the grossness many associate with eating oysters.
ReplyDeleteI am definitely someone that takes smell and texture into account when I’m trying new things, so if something doesn’t smell right or the texture looks off I probably won’t try it. My family likes to go out to Basque restaurants around the holidays when my extended family is in town and they all love to eat pickled tongue and I can’t bring myself to try it or even be near it. I don’t think I could ever eat any form of tongue, brain, heart or intestines.
Hi Chelsea. I had never heard of charbroiled oysters until my friend ordered them at a seafood restaurant before. I don't think I would ever try oysters, but I might if they were charbroiled because it does take away some of the weird texture.
DeleteExactly. Being charbroiled took away some of the sliminess, so that definitely made them more appealing.
Deletethat stuff is good.
DeleteI am so impressed by that wealth of experiences! It sounds delicious--most of it!
ReplyDeleteI personally have never ate such strange foods as the ones that are mentioned but I would not mind giving some a try. One strange food that I have eaten for many years are Tacos de Lengua( Tounge Tacos). Everytime I go to mexican food places I have to have these, they are my favorite. Now that I realize it, it sounds really gross but the taste is much better than expected. At parties when the taquero man shows up I know what I'm in for because I eat my favorite type of tacos.
ReplyDeleteI like eating lengua with chile, Cilantro, and grilled onions because it makes it have a better taste! Other than that, these are my favorite type of tacos. I'm eager to try more of the strange foods that are mentioned above because I'm always up for trying new foods.
Cow tongue is actually delightful, they have a very distinctive flavor. Put it in tacos with different sauce and its good.
DeleteI have never tried a taco de lengua before but I admit to being intrigued to try it. I had cow tongue the first time a few years ago at a Basque restaurant in Bakersfield I thought it was pretty good, I imagine it tastes even better in a taco.
DeleteI am not really one to try many new foods. I have always been a pretty picky eater. I feel it is very hard to go out of my comfort zone when it comes to food because either I don't know what is in it or I can't pronounce it. Although I may not try so many crazy foods, I hope to start changing that. I would love to be able to experience and try foods from other cultures.
ReplyDeleteSomething I would never want to eat is anything that is alive. Foods like larvae and live octopus really creep me out because they move on the plate and even when you eat them. I have seen videos before and I would not be able to handle eating an animal/insect that is moving on my dinner plate. I have also read that when eating an octopus, the tentacles on the legs are still active sometimes and can get stuck when chewing or swallowing. Insects dead or alive are not really appealing to me at all. When i think of bugs I think of germs and everything they walk on which grosses me out. I also do not like the crunchy sound they make when being eaten. For now I will stick to what I know and continue to take baby steps in trying new foods.
I completely understand what you mean about wanting to experience other cultures through food. Although I don't consider myself an adventurous eater, I am always willing to try something from another country just to say that I did. I hope you get more opportunities to try new things!
DeleteKarissa,
DeleteI totally agree, it is very difficult to try new things especially when those things are kind of odd. There are things that I would never consider food, yet there is people out there who think they are delicious. I guess it would be good to try to get out of our comfort zone more often and experience what types of foods are out there.
Karissa, I completely agree with you! I would not eat anything that is alive for the same reason. I saw a video of a guy eating a octopus alive and he died within 10 seconds!
DeleteAs an immigrant and came from another country, many of the locals might think that different cultures and different ethnicity have many different food that are strange to others. I am a guy that eats anything, I am not picky yet I find some food that are very different and strange in some way. So we Filipinos have this egg called "balut," it is a duck egg that is somewhere from 20-40 days old. So the older it gets the better it is. "Balut" is an egg that came from a duck. The older it gets the nastier is becomes in my opinion, yes I said earlier that the older it gets the better it is, well that only applies to the Filipino Natives. So a lot of filipino locals eat this egg, they steam it for one hour until it gets fully cooked. This egg is completely disgusting. So this is egg compose of the yolk, the white stuff and wait for it a baby embryo duck inside this egg. The taste is unpleasant and the smell of it is not good either. The way people eat this is with vinegar and salt, I was told that the juice from this egg is very healthy, and it is good for the body, but I swear I will never try that again.
ReplyDeleteHow is it going manong? I have never tried balut before and as an American Fiipino I feel like I'm missing out. Although, the only time I told myself I would eat that is in the country of the Phillipines!
DeleteHi ading, man you should I mean that stuff is available here to. I know some place where you can get them. That stuff is good with san miguel
DeleteThat is interesting duck egg, have never heard of people eating trying that around here. sounds pretty nasty, especially the fact that the older it gets the better? I have tried duck meat, not very good either. Have you tried it? I know duck meat is common to eat in the Asian culture.
DeleteI've always been curious about Balut. It doesn't really sound that bizarre to me. Would there be any place to try it in the U.S., or would I strictly have to travel to try it?
DeleteI am a person who typically does not like half-cooked eggs. I prefer eggs to be fully-cooked, and fried as omelets. I really wish I could be curious, and try the “Balut” egg. I also would love to try English and other European foods, which I have never heard of before. I also hope to make sweet, sugar-free, and healthy Turkish delight candies. I really do have the real recipe for Turkish delight. I just hope to modify it, by changing a few ingredients to make it more delicious and healthy. I also like mangoes, dates, durians, and rambutans.
DeleteI think the strangest thing I have ever consumed is a dish called "kilowin" which is essentially raw goat meat. The meat was a lightly boiled on the outside but it is basically a raw dish. The way my uncle and my dad prepared it was first finding a goat for sale. Then, they take it to my grandpa's backyard to slaughter it. The next step is to clean out the intestines and all the inedible parts that is later used for something else. Then it is fire roasted until the outside skin is crispy and burnt. After that we pour boiling water over the carcass. The last step is to slice it into thin strips of burnt and a little raw meat that is mixed with vinegar, red onion, green onion, chopped ginger and lemon. I suppose the acidity cooks the meat but it still has a chewy texture. Although it might sound nasty the meat is actually good. It is nutritious, clean meat that I have not tried in some time now but overall it was sort of a strange food.
ReplyDeleteMan reading this just makes me miss Philippines more. Ive been wanting to go back and experience all this kind of stuff again. A lot of people are going to think that we are weird but they should try our food, because that is one thing that will connect different cultures.
DeleteThe strangest thing I've eaten was probably chocolate covered crickets, but even that seems boring. I noticed a lot of people mentions tacos de lengua, which is strange if I think about it but it also seems so normal since many of us grew up eating them. But one thing I could never eat is oysters! For some reason they gross me out, I am far from being a picky eater but I can not touch oysters! Now that I think about it I hope to try new and strange foods in the future, it would be a very interesting experience.
ReplyDeleteYou should try Oyster shooters. search them up they are so good.
DeleteI need to try chocolate covered crickets. You need to try tacos de lengua one day, they are too good.
DeleteOverall, I have eaten sandwiches with fish, hummus, and olives mixed together. At the AV fair, I have eaten deep-fried Oreos, and funnel cakes. At the Le Chien Acton French restaurant, I have eaten salmon moutards and mussels. I would also like to let you know that I have eaten lamb, goat, fish, and chicken curries at Asian restaurants. Overall, I am not an exotic eater even though I know that turtle soup, duck soup, and other amazing foods exist. If there were foods I could avoid eating, I would avoid lentils, ants, and rats. For your information, I currently eat fewer meats (I eat them in the vacations). Once in a while, I would go to one restaurant in Valencia and have a chocolate/banana budino.
ReplyDeleteThe fish sandwich does not sound good, at least to my appetite, maybe because I do not like fish in a sandwich. However, it sounds like you have tried some pretty good foods, especially the budino. I have never tried that and I am a lover for chocolate. You would not eat lentils? they are one of my favorite food but I tried to put more flavor into them then just plain, like bacon, eggs, and ham.
DeleteDoes turtle or duck meat taste gamy? what other exotic meats are you willing to try?
DeleteIt is hard to say. Sometimes ostrich meat, duck meat, and goat meat can be tasty. I like a lot of foods. It is just that I eat fewer meats compared to before.
DeleteThe strangest thing that I have unknowingly ate would have to be cow tongue. I'm Hispanic, so my parents are food fanatics, always making delicious Mexican dishes. And growing up in their household I would never ask questions as to what we were specifically eating. I would just “go with it”. Until, one day I notice my dad's carne asada tacos tasted different. The texture of the meat was the total opposite of what I was used to. The meat was thinner and softer. By the time that I was done eating a couple tacos I notice my brothers laughing at me. They were teasing me about how I just finished eating cow tongue. Upset I started to argue with them. Crying I told my mother that they were teasing me. My mom got upset and told my brothers to stop messing around. Upset my brothers grabbed the container that the cow tongue was in and showed me the label. Where it read cow tongue. I was mortified. Not that I have anything against cow tongue. I just prefer other meats over it. So when I eat menudo, I only serve myself the maiz and the broth. I can do without the pig intestines. When I go to Mexican parties I choose rice and beans over deer and lamb meat. One of the worst meat story that haunts me to this day, is when me and my family went to Mexico. I must have still been in elementary school, I was young. But I remembered we drove, which only meant we would have to stop frequently to eat. And in one specific restaurant I noticed a rabbit as there logo on the side of their building. Thinking nothing of it, I started eating these tacos my mother had ordered for me in Spanish. Enjoying my tacos, my brothers again started to tease me about how I was eating rabbit. I literally started to cry. My mom to this day will say it was chicken but the question that haunts me is the one my brother told me. “Then, why is there a rabbit on the side of the building, stating we serve rabbit?”. So rabbit may or may not have been the strangest thing I have ate.
ReplyDeleteHi @Rsegundo, that must have been awful thinking you're eating one thing when it's really something else. My mom tricked me into eating cow tongue even though I told her I would never try it. Also, if I found out I was eating a rabbit, I think I would cry a little too even at my age haha.
DeleteI've spent the past few days trying to remember if I have ever tried anything strange and I honestly can't think of anything crazy. I guess I'll lean towards cow tongue. My mom tricked me into eating a burrito of it knowing I never wanted to try it. I remember taking a bite and immediately knowing something's not right. I don't like the weird texture of it, but I know a lot of people actually prefer that meat. I've had avocado ice-cream, which I'm not sure is considered strange because avocados are the best. It was actually really good though. Not being much of a meat eater, I probably won't try meat again, but especially foods that are slimy and squishy in texture. I wouldn't try caviar because eating fish eggs doesn't sound appetizing to me even if it's considered a delicacy. Also, I really don't like carrot smoothies. My mom used to always make me guzzle down large glass cups of carrot juice when I was little because she swore it would help with my vision. It was never blended too well and had a weird grainy texture and tasted exactly like sweet carrots.
ReplyDeleteSo do you consider yourself a vegetarian or do you just eat meat when it seems appetizing?
DeleteAvocado ice-cream sounds bizarre to me! Avocados are good but with ice cream thats quite different. Sometimes textures of food make them difficult to eat!
DeleteI think the weirdest this I have ever eaten is cow heart. It was honestly really good. I only had it once but I would definitely eat it again. My dad made it for me when I was younger and it has a tough texture and you have to chew it for a long time. I don't think I would eat anything weirder that that like tongue or bugs. If offered foods I have never eaten before from different cultures I would be as open minded as I can be but I draw a nice thick line at bugs.
ReplyDeleteHi Mirryah, wow a cows heart! That's so cool that it tasted good, I wish I could say that I have tried something as bizarre as that. Cool story though!
DeleteA cow heart? Thats definitely crazy! I also am like that, whenever introduced to something I will give it a try. Most times I find myself enjoying the food!
DeleteI think the strangest things I have eaten are snake and deer meat. I ate both of these at a younger age in Mexico when I visited my deceased grandparents. They lived in a ranch that"s about 4 hours away from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, so commuting for them wasn't easy. With that being said, my grandpa done this hunting for survival purposes, and he became very well known for it. Deer meat was a delicacy in this little ranch, so he also made some profit from it. The occasional snake was due to whether he spotted one while he was hunting. Well, as for the taste comparison, to me the snake meat didn't taste much like anything, but the deer meat tasted like cow.
ReplyDeleteHi, I think it is really cool that you have tried snake meat. Was there a lot meat like from a big snake? Did you guys only eat a certain kind of snakes?
DeleteHi Crystal, to be honest with you I don't remember what time of snake it was because as I mentioned this was when I was really young and before my grandpa passed away. However, I do remember they weren't really big, each snake was about good enough for 2 persons.
DeleteThe strangest thing I have every eaten would be lamb meat. I had lamb meat once and that was in when I went to Mexico for vacations on October of last year. A friend from our family cooked the lamb and when he brought the food to our gathering the lamb was in a big cooking pot. When I looked inside the head was the first thing I saw and I was disgusted. I was hungry and that was the only thing available at the gathering. Plus everyone was eating it and I didn’t want to look stuck up, therefore I had to eat it. I was surprised it tasted really good that I even had seconds. I noticed that lamb is supposed to be eaten quickly because it gets cold quickly and it doesn’t taste good. Another food that I have eaten and consider strange is the cows tongue. I love cow tongue but this case was weird because it was a tongue that had been in the freezer for over a year. The thing is that, I got married in Mexico on September 2015 and my father in law killed one of his cows for our wedding. When the cow was sacrificed they gave my father in law the tongue and the guts; which are also delicious. Well to make the story short they forgot all about the tongue and on December 2016 we noticed the tongue in the fridge and we cooked it. It was just awkward eating a tongue that I knew was a year old but then who knows how old is the meat they sell in the U.S. By the way the cow tongue was delicious.
ReplyDeleteHey Denise, I could imagine how awkward it was to eat tongue that is that old. I could totally agree that cow tongue is very delicious!
DeleteWhen I think of the strangest thing I have ever eaten I think of two things. The first thing that comes to mind is when I went to MOO Creamery and seen that they had maple bacon ice cream. To me, this seemed so strange even though I know that people love to put bacon in everything. I wasn’t sure if it would just have the flavor or actual bacon and to my surprise it had tons of actual bacon. I ended up enjoying it. The second thing that comes to mind when I saw this writing topic was pickled cow tongue. I personally don’t think it’s a very strange item to eat but my friends definitely think differently. I think once someone gets over the fact that they have a cow’s tongue in their mouth then it’s pretty good. I think if my parents didn’t eat it or introduce it to me when I was younger I probably think it’s a weird choice of food. I would like to explore and try more strange food especially because I love to watch Bizarre Foods. I don’t think I have a particular food I won’t eat but I will definitely stay away from anything that is served alive. I remember seeing a video on Facebook where someone had ordered a meal and on the very top was a live octopus moving its tentacles around. During the whole video all I could think of was the possibility of the tentacles sticking to my esophagus which totally grossed me out. Overall I haven’t really tried anything very strange but I plan to broaden my horizons.
ReplyDeleteI think bacon ice cream also sounds very strange, I don't think I could try it only if I was feeling a little adventurous. Pickled tongue on the other hand is soothing that I have never liked, my family and friend eat it but I think its too squishy for a meat.
DeleteI wish I could say I've been more daring trying foods but sadly I have not. Reading through the students different posts it looks like I have a variety of new food to try! One kind of food that I refuse to eat is insects, I just can't do it. The thought of eating a cockroach or grasshopper just freaks me out! I also don't think I could eat a snake or anything with tentacles. Although I'm jealous of other students that they are able to say they've tried all these different kind of exotic foods, I also know I don't think I could digest something like that. The most bizarre it gets for me is watching the Food Channel and seeing the exotic food shows.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, eating insects doesn't seem to appetizing! Some students have eaten some strange things! Some of the foods on television are extremely bizarre!
DeleteIve tried insects before while out hiking and at summer camp. Insects aren't that bad to be honest. I've had fried crickets before and they were seasoned and everything. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
DeleteI have tried alligator before. I had it for the first time at this seafood festival up north in the Antioch/Concord area in the Bay Area. It was surprisingly good at the least. It tasted like chicken to be honest. Even though all my family members are from the South, I would and have never tried to eat pig feet, chitlins, hogmog and a few other foods that a lot of southerners eat. I eat a lot of food from different cultures but those specific ones that I mentioned, I just can't do it.
ReplyDeleteI've heard alligator is really good! That's awesome that you got to try it
Delete- To be honest I feel like my taste buds are unfamiliar to strange foods. What I have ate in the past does not seem or taste strange to me at least. However, what may seem strange to other people is chicken's feet soup. This soup sounds unconventional, but it just tastes like what it is: chicken. I first tried the chicken's feet soup in Mexico, where it is known to be conventional. The soup includes 2 to 4 chicken feet with the skin, diced carrots, lemon, onion, cilantro and salsa to your liking. Although chicken's feet soup may sound strange, it is a healthy, tasty, simple soup.
ReplyDeleteI had been a vegetarian for the past two years and decided a month ago to start eating meat again. I wanted to be adventurous with what I eat and try different culture's cuisine as it should be. While I haven't been experiencing as many cultural dishes as I would like, I did try Korean BBQ for the first time last week. They served shrimp with the face still attached, eyeballs and all. I also ate tiny octopus smothered in some sort of chili sauce. I did not think these food items were "strange", but they are definitely not served in most American Restaurants. I had a great experience and look forward to eating more cultural dishes!
