WEEK FOUR BLOG ENTRY

This week you turned in your first essay in this class. In general, I find that students enjoy writing about food. As a people, we eat out a lot and so I choose that as our first essay precisely because it allows you to write from a world you know--write from a place of abundance! We should always write from a position of knowledge, yet many times in college, the opposite is true--we write in worlds that are difficult and foreign.
So here is the question this week:

For you, is the essay writing process difficult? If so, what is most difficult about it? If not, what is your process?
Either way, you could also respond to any of the following: do you write at night, in the morning, in an office, in the library, with music? If so, what kind of music? Do your surroundings help you write?

(this entry feels like Dr. Seuss...do you like them in a car? do you like them near or far?)

  1. - In regards to essays, writing can sail smoothly or feel like a bumpy road depending on the topic. I find that sometimes my mental state takes a major part in my writing process as well. It all depends. However, I do have an approach to essays when I find myself in a pickle. I plan out what each body paragraph will include and from the body paragraphs I compose my introduction and conclusion. Introductions can be conflicting, but the body paragraphs help guide me.
Over the years, I have appreciated the power of writing. To simply write about my day, emotions, or current events has helped me cope with LIFE. Writing has molded me into my own person. I believe this because sometimes we need to spend time with ourselves to learn about ourselves, and taking the time to write has done that for me. I prefer to isolate myself when I write, but it does not really matter where I am at. There is something about writing with the company of blues music. I usually go to Spotify and select the playlist called "In The Name of Blues". There, I find pure legends such as, Etta James, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Albert King and more. I can also never go wrong with any classic rock artist. Writing and music are heavenly. They are my coping centers, they are my therapists.

    1. Yup, music really helps me get the creative juices flowing, as well as putting me in the "zone" to write, too!!
Isolation is also something I require, too. If my dogs are too attention starved, I have to put them outside to roam and play on the picturesque acre we live on.

  2. I think I can write a great essay, and a lot of the time without too much of a struggle. For me, the hardest part is what needs to be done before writing, such as, proper research and background knowledge. I think having all the material before hand makes writing a breeze. My process is to first, gather specific quotes and examples with page numbers that I want to use to support my thesis. Then I ALWAYS have to put together a somewhat specific outline that consists of my thesis, topic sentences and quotations. Once I sit down to actually write the essay I know everything I need to include, as well as adding other summarization and support. I have always enjoyed English and grammar so if the topic really intrigues me, I might even have some nice alone time writing.

    1. sounds like you have a clear plan. Some people write better by planning it all out. Others do better with a general idea and then just jumping in--I love your concept of "alone time writing."

    2. Jade I totally agree with you when it comes to the researching that can be a problem because sometimes you cannot find any information but then yet again when you find the information you need you don't know which one to use or write about.

    3. Jade,

I really like your discussion post. This is because you came up with a very good point, that having the correct writing sources and materials makes writing easy. There are a lot of tools to help form a thesis, such as the following: similes, metaphors, examples, quotes, allusions, data, and facts. A thesis has three prongs (main ideas), and each prong should represent a particular body paragraph. Basically, writing research papers and essays includes an introductory paragraph (writing about what you will tell the audience), three body paragraphs (writing about what you are currently discussing), and a conclusion paragraph (writing about what you already told the audience). This same process includes the following: choosing the topic, brainstorming what you know about the topic, collecting resources, using indicators (symbols) to mark what is really important for your research paper, gathering the important information, constructing an outline, forming your thoughts, and finally writing your draft. This is a huge, fun, and useful process for the future of writing. I like your post, because you came up with these good ideas for writing your thesis statement: searching for sources early, using page numbers to number quotes and examples, using a perfect outline to match your findings, and adding summaries and proof. Citing sources is another good idea as well. Overall, you wrote a good post.

  3. My first step in writing in an essay, I have to be in a quite place. I am both comfortable writing in the morning or at night. I concentrate either way. I like writing in the library, because it is quite and it has a great view outside the windows. The most difficult part of an essay for me, is gathering the information needed to write the essay. It takes me awhile researching information if it is needed. I struggle with the word cited page too. I have cited so many times, but for some reason I always have to look up on how to cite an article. It depends on the question of the topic too. If I am familiar with information on the question, then I struggle less. If the question is difficult for me, then it takes me longer to write an essay. I have noticed that the more I write, then the more I feel comfortable about writing essays. I like to plan out my introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion to make it easier for me. I write my thesis sentence for the introduction, then I have my three main ideas for the body paragraphs, and finally I give a summary on the conclusion.

  4. My essay writing process is usually difficult because although I try to plan ahead and have an outline and a structure for my essay, I often change my mind about what I want to say. As I write, other ideas come to mind and make me want to change the route I am going. I go back and forth a lot, especially on research papers. Sometimes I don't know what to include and what not to. I'm not going to lie, I don't always outline beforehand-- sometimes I just jump in and go with the flow. When I do this, the writing process is a lot smoother than when I do outlines. That probably sounds contradicting but it works for me most times. I could never write in the morning, so I usually write my essays late at night. The environment doesn't bother me much because I usually tune people out, but I do prefer being alone. Also, I cannot listen to music with words while I'm writing. I either tune it out completely or change it to instrumental.

  5. I think the writing process for me can be difficult but depending on the topic it can me easy as well. I think what is most difficult for me is knowing what I am talking about. If the topic is difficult the writing process is also difficult for me. As long as I have information on the topic I find that writing comes naturally to me. My process for writing is first getting as much information about my writing topic as possible. After I have the information I write a rough outline and then I just start typing away on my laptop. After I write as much as I can I go through my draft and make corrections that I believe are necessary. I usually write at night when my two daughters are sleeping and with music on, unless it is a hard topic then the music is off now that I really think about it. My surroundings have to be organized, for example I can’t concentrate if my living room is untidy or if I haven’t washed the dishes. I also enjoy writing when I’m sitting on the couch and I am very comfortable.

  6. I, personally, have a love/hate relationship with writing. Often times, I just don’t know how to approach the topic. In math, for example, I can begin a problem in a systematic way. Writing doesn’t come as easily. For given assignments, I draw boxes and title each one with the areas that which we need to touch on. Within each box I then write out the corresponding points. I will physically write out a summed up version of everything I want to include. Then when I have the basics down, I just start typing it all out. I usually have tons of revisions and I am rarely satisfied with the finished product. I’ve learned that once I submit my work, I do not go back to it any more. I, unlike a lot of people, don’t find writing therapeutic. I find it dreadful and anxiety inducing, and even more so when it’s for a writing class. :D I think it has more to do with the fact that there are tons of thoughts flowing and having to work through what to include, what to leave out, and staying on topic. I come from a family full of wonderful writers. They can effortlessly write up a great paper. I envy that it comes so easily to them. The extent of writing I do, outside of school, is notes to myself, lists I keep, and the rewriting of what my assignments are and when they’re due. I try my hardest and most times I do well. When I score well on an assignment, it does help make the next paper easier; which in turn makes writing it just a tad less stressful.

  7. The essay writing process for me is much more simple if I have a common knowledge about the subject or if it's a descriptive essay as the previous submission. I tend to have trouble writing about topics that do not interest me but I love food so it made it easy for me this time around. By taking notes and having everything planned out before I started writing was also a major help. Most of the time when writing I enjoy a nice quite spot outside when the sun is shining and I have no distractions. I start by writing a rough draft that is barely held together and then I will go in and piece everything after. I find this much easier for me than trying to make each paragraph flawless first time around. The only type of music I can write to is classical but even that distracts me sometimes. Overall, the topic of this essay and my outline notes were a major aid and I enjoyed writing.

  8. For me, the essay writing process can be difficult at times depending on what the teacher wants. I find it difficult at times when because teachers want different types of formats and have different requirements. I think the most difficult part is the introduction paragraph because that paragraph outlines and specifies your whole essay. Depending on the topic the essay process can be easy or difficult. After finishing the introduction paragraph the rest of the essay process comes easily and the ideas flow because I have an idea of where I'm going with my essay. I prefer to write in the afternoons or at night because I am not a morning person. the place doesn't matter as long as it's a quiet place. Noisy places get me off focus and is a distraction.

    3. Hey Neida,
you are right, most of the time writing the introduction is very difficult because that's where we must state the whole purpose of the essay. I also struggle at times especially when I don't find the subject interesting.

  9. To be honest I love the writing process and well sometimes I struggle a bit but I always end up finding a way to write a whole essay from start to finish. I love that I can get creative with my writing and that's what makes me want to write more, if I'm outdoors I will pull out my notebook and just being outdoors with the fresh breeze I get inspired to write. I'm the type of guy who loves to write scripted things as in movies scripts with writing that you can create so much and be more involved with your writing. I always wanted to write a novel a mystery because I love a good mystery something out of a Wes Craven film you trying to find out who the killer is suspense and action. When I decided to write I usually prefer being in a quiet place only because I can concentrated more and get more creative and sometimes I use my own life experience to write maybe change it a bit so the audience could be captivate in my story. When it comes to re reading what I write I sometimes can't even believe that came out of my brain I sometimes shock myself. It may be a long process but I will eventually get there with my stories just think of what you can create on paper it would be something amazing that you wont believe your eyes. If you truly believe in yourself trust me when I say anything and I mean anything is possible.

  11. I do agree on the part that we feel more comfortable when we write or talk about any subject that we have knowledge of. On my case is a little harder, first I’m not comfortable discussing when I’m not familiar with the topic, second even if I know what I’m talking about, I’m not comfortable since English is not my primary language. I find very challenging when I have to write a paper, it seems like I’m doing three jobs in one. I must do my research as everyone else, then I take longer choosing the right words, and finally to put the sentences in the correct order. Planning is the key, I start writing as soon as I can, first I let my brain go crazy and write down all possible ideas, then I return, read and make possible changes. I hate doing research, the more information I find it makes me hesitate on what I already have. Because my work and classes schedule, I normally do my homework at night time. I need to have a quiet place when I’m reading or doing research. My favorite place for writing is laying on the floor. At the time of writing sometimes I like to play some instrumental music that relaxes my mind.

  12. For me, the writing process has been fairly easy. Like previous classmates have stated, it also depends on what the professor wants and is looking for. If a professor were to give me free range to write a topic, I can write a 3-5 page paper with ease, but if it were a topic I had little knowledge of, I would struggle in the beginning. Although that being the case, I have noticed that once I get started on the topic, I can just sail right through it. I like writing at night when I have absolutely no distractions. During the day I have errands to run or other responsibilities so I can not truly put all my focus into the paper. Also when I write, I love listening to country to music to help me write and calm me down. I have always liked country music so it just helps me mellow the mood for when I have to sit at a computer and write an essay.

    1. You are lucky Christian, I wish it was at least fairly easy for me but i find it a bit tough. I need quietness as well when it comes to writing. This is when I can focus better and write a decent paper.

    2. Having little knowledge on a topic makes it so much harder to write about. When there are no distractions it is so much easier. Knowing that you have things to do or places to be make it impossible to write.

    3. Christian,

I agree with the fact that having expertise and knowledge on a topic, makes the writing process fairly easy. Knowledge and expertise gives the writer confidence, about what he or she should write about. A person should be willing to devote a lot of time, especially when the topic is unknown for this same writer. You were absolutely right about this. I typically like to write at night, because the idea of night reminds me of moonlight which calms my mind. I write stories at night, and on nice cloudy days. The ideas of the moonlight and the rain, keep my mind calm and relaxed. It often reminds me of a calm whistle of wind, which blows peacefully through the air. In my case, I listen to the following music which calms my mind: rock, classical, country, and European. These types of music make me focused as a writer. Overall, you wrote a good discussion post. This is because you came up with great responses and explanations, about music and the writing process. We have the following three things in common: country music calms our mind (while writing papers), we agree on the same aspect of expertise/knowledge, and we both like writing stories at night.

  14. The process of writing essays, for me, is some what unconventional. First, I ponder on the topic, and mentally begin doing the rough draft in my head. Whether I am walking with my dogs and soaking in the mountain scenery, lying down with either music or an educational science or history show on as white noise, my mind is working on the rough draft simultaneously. When I begin writing I usually have music playing in the background. Depending on the mood, the type of music varies; from listening to XM Chill that features down-tempo-tripnotic type music, jazz featuring Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, etc., or classical with composers like Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, etc. Album oriented rock like with groups like YES, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, and similar groups that feature longer more composed movement type songs. The side one of RUSH:2112 is a classic example.
Depending on the subject, it can flow like silk or drag as if I am being tied down with a two ton weight. When the two ton weight scenario happens, I have to take a much more methodical approach in first making an outline, then the mental rough draft, on to the rough draft and corrections to make it a final draft. It could be three a.m., or 12 noon when I begin to go on my essay marathon, but it all depends on my mood and when I finally have that "aha" moment, and the rough draft in my mind is ready to be put to paper. Unconventional, most likely yes, but it works for me.

  15. For me, my best approach towards writing is just going with the flow. Throughout my academic years, I have learned that if I have an idea flowing through my head that I should go with it. It’s like riding a skateboard or a bicycle: the best way to balance is to keep moving forward. So, whenever I have an essay to write I have my general ideas that I formulate. The next thing I do is have a general understanding of the order in which I am going to present. Then I think about examples I can include and other details. I try to envision a mental outline and just type. Eventually, when I begin to write, ideas begin to come out of my brain and it makes it easier for me to have an abundance of new material. So, first things first, write and continue to do so until things start to flow.
While I am writing, I like to be in a calm environment without too many distractions. The best places for me to write is somewhere close to a window or even outside. I find myself in a higher state of mind when I can see light. For me, it gives my internal clock a reassurance of time. When I have that feeling of contentment, it allows my brain to think much better. While I write I also like to listen to classical and reggae music. Those two genres are important to me because of the different rhythms fuels my brain.

  16. The essay writing process for me personally is not as difficult as long as the topic allows me express my ideas rather than forcing me to choose a side. When I can relate to the topic (for instance writing about food) I can put ideas down and go on and on about what I think about the particular topic. I remember my second year here at CSUB I took a creative writing class and I loved every minute of it. I loved it now because it was easy but because it gave me the freedom to express my thoughts on a piece of paper without being judged. I would say that when I am given the opportunity to be creative with my own writing I enjoy it. I dislike when I am forced to go on a particular route while writing because I feel as if I am not completely expressing my thoughts on the subject.
When it comes to writing, I prefer doing it at night or late in the afternoon at the library. I need lots of silence in order to be able to focus on what I will be writing. I also need to take my time planning my writing and once I am done with it I continuously read it just to double check it. Of course I tend to do this a lot simply because I over think a lot. One thing I cannot do when it comes to writing is music. Most of friends need music in order to focus and write, but I personally cannot do both at the same time because I feel as if the music takes away my thoughts rather than helping me focus. I wish I was able to listen to music though, I feel like it would probably keep me awake when I am writing long papers on a subject that I don't find as interesting.

I will typically write in the afternoon or at night because that is when I have the most time available and also feel the most creative with my writing. I prefer to do all my writing from my home office. I don't think music helps with my writing. I get too involved in the music and want to rock out and not write. 18. Personally, I find the writing process challening at first. After reading a prompt I find it hard to come up with ideas on how to approach the essay. The part I find most challenging is the organization of an eassy. Once i come up with a plan on how to organize an essay then it is easy to write. I tend to write in a quiet place such a the library or at home. I muct be in a clean organized space or i will get easily distracted. Strangely, I find that i write my best work last minute. I know that sounds bad but i think that the time restaint really forces me to think. This is a very bad habbit of mine and i am trying to fix it. Hopefully this class will help me with that.

  19. The most difficult part of the writing process for me is gathering my ideas. I like to make sure I have the right ideas I want my essay to have. I don’t like feeling unprepared for an essay because it makes me feel that I failed the assignment. Also. Sometimes gathering information for an outside source can get difficult to pick out one specific quote you want to talk about when there are so many good ones. I actually don’t have a problem writing during the day or night, as long as I am in a quiet place. I wish I was able to concentrate with music, but I can’t. I can concentrate both in the library and in my room. I can concentrate well at the CSUB library on the second floor and in my room. I think my surroundings do help me write because when I am in my room, I am alone and know that I have to get things done and if there was someone else in there, I would feel bad and want to talk to them or simply get distracted and strike up a conversation if they haven’t already. When I am in the library on the computers, I feel like I am in a little cubicle and that helps me concentrate a lot. I actually I have not tried going to the computers on the first floor that is why I specified the second floor. When I am typing, I am actually able to block out conversations easier than if I was reading.

  21. The writing process itself is not that hard, but finding time to sit down and actually gather your materials to write is the challenging part. I often tell myself I work better under pressure, but its usually because I forget, procrastinate, or choose not to do it sooner until its due in less than 24 hours. I don’t remember the last time I worked on a paper longer than two weeks. My best writing happens at night. Usually around 2am, when the world is silent and it feels like it is just me and the paper, with limited distractions. The hardest part is not getting distracted while writing, especially not checking social media. I value my sleep as much as possible but if I have procrastinated too long, then I punish myself and wake up early making sure it is finished. I listen to podcasts or music when I write. It can’t be in English, because I end up singing along, and it gets hard to sing and read scholarly sources at the same time. My go to music would be Japanese or Korean pop music, sometimes Spanish music but that sometimes gets distracting too. Pod casts are okay to listen to while I find sources and gather my information but not while I write. I usually choose to write alone, with an energy drink by my side. The places I usually occupy are either the kitchen table or my room. My room can sometimes be distracting, so I usually stay in the kitchen until my assignment is finished. Funny enough, I am sitting at the table now.

The reason I said I was agreeing, emphasis on the was, is because you later said you listen to music also. You are missing out on the crickets when you do that.

  22. For me the writing process of an essay is difficult depending on what type of essay or paper I am writing about. Usually if it's a prompt essay the difficult part is writing a good thesis statement because I know that will be the guideline to where my essay will develop. Also I think the most difficult part for me to start is the introduction since it is where I will gather my ideas and develop them into bodies which is why I think writing a thesis statement is always the most difficult part since organizing a good thesis makes it easier for me to develop a structure. However, when writing an essay in general I usually struggle with grammar issues, that is why I always try to seek for extra help to make sure my paper sounds readable. When I write I like a calm environment because it makes it easier for me to concentrate and focus on my thoughts and ideas. Sometimes I like to play some soothing music in the background while I expand my train of thoughts. I usually like the daylight when I am writing because it keeps me awake and more alert; nonetheless, I can also write at any time of the day when it comes to getting something done especially when I have developed the structure of the essay or I have a good idea of what I am going to say. I just think it really depends on the project and subject of what I am writing about that makes it more difficult or easier.

    1. It is usually a bit easier when writing about what you know, rather than writing about something you have no clue about. This can make any paper difficult to write. Especially if you already have a difficult time writing.

  23. The process of writing an essay isn't exactly the hardest, especially once I get the rhythm going. However, I would say that there are several contributing factors that could hamper the quality of my writing. I don't really listen to music when writing, nor do I really do much of anything. Often times, I'll write in pure silence, perhaps in the dark or in the early mornings, then revise it later. However, this is the main issue: I do not think proofreading is my strong suit. Rather, I can't proofread my own writing at all. I think for the most part, I don't like reading what I write. Everytime I take a look at my writing, I always beat myself a little too hard and overanalyze every single mistake I do. It's a meticulous process, and this trait isn't just for my writing. I often analyze all every single action I do, whether it's writing or even casual conversations. I often wonder what I can do better, and how I can reduce my bad habits. Often times, doing that is a difficult task. The other major factor when it comes to writing is perhaps concentration. While I can stay engaged in writing many things (I play tabletop games such as Dungeons and Dragons all the time), I always feel the need to just do something else after a little while. While it is suggested that you should take a break every now and again, I feel undisciplined with those breaks. It's very often I'll leave something in the back burner for a long time and not get it done until now.

So yeah, overall, writing an essay perhaps isn't difficult; the problems lie with overanalyzation and concentration issues.

  24. The essay writing process has always been difficult for me. I find it more difficult when I have to think about how I am going to construct it. It’s kind of hard when I can’t come up with the main idea and making sure that it is in my essay. Lately since I have had to write many essays I am getting the gist of it and its becoming a bit easier and I am able to construct an essay without over thinking it. When I had to do my first essay for the semester I had a hard time starting it. And I have issues with this in all my essays so I have to break it down and make sure that my thoughts are not all over the place. When I am wring an essay, it has to be quiet and calm because this allows me to think. This helps a lot because my thoughts are clear and I have no distractions around me. I have a spare room that I turned into an office and that has helped a lot because I’m able to be in the room alone with no noise. I enjoy listening to music but it’s not possible when I am doing writing or other school work. I really do not have a time frame when I start to write, it’s at any time of the day. I usually try to get my essays done ahead of time so I can have time to make corrections and see if it sounds good to turn in.

  25. Writing an essay for me can be difficult for me at times depending on the type of essay I have to write. As long as I am writing about something that interests me than I should be fine but writing about something that does not interest me I tend to get distracted and have no motivation write. Usually when I write I start off with separating my ideas into the paragraphs that they will go in. Before typing my essay I like to write it on a piece a paper, when I do this I do not pay attention to grammar or whether it makes sense. When I go to type my final paper I go over my written essay and fix all the mistakes I had as well as organize it as I go over my written draft I am able to see if I missed any information or sometimes I come up with something to add into it. The hardest part about writing for me is length, I tend to be someone who doesn’t write very descriptive, I like to keep my answers short so when I have to write a certain page/word length essay I have to keep going back and put more information or be more descriptive in order for it to reach the maximum length. When I write I prefer to be in a place that is quiet but not to quiet, I have to work somewhere that is away from a window because I get distracted by the outside world easily.

  26. The essay writing process is always difficult for me because I have trouble coherently translating my thoughts and ideas into words. If it is a topic that I am passionate about, however, the words flow without problem. If I am writing about a topic I have zero interest in, I will only put in minimum effort that will allow me to meet the rubric. My essay-writing process is simple. I just keep writing regardless of how simple or silly the sentences sound – the point is to write nonstop and don’t get hung up on editing a certain sentence or word. After that is finished, I will then go back to what I wrote and organize the words into a neat essay format, fix up the sentences and words, and proofread it a few times and edit it. I find that I finish essays faster this way because I am not stopping myself to edit as I am writing. It saves a lot of time. I mostly write at night because that’s when my brain is the most clear. I like to write in silence and in private; I do not like background noises or being in a public setting when I write.

    2. When Im writing I tend to leave the editing till the end otherwise I keep going back and forth and so much extra time is being wasted. I lose my thoughts and end up taking much longer then ever imagined. Background noises make it almost impossible to write in my position also.

  27. Personally, for me, the process writing is difficult when I do not have a clue what I am writing about. Writing about something I know or I am comfortable with makes the writing process sail a lot smoother. If I write about a topic I am not familiar with, it takes me much longer to start and it makes it a lot more difficult to start also. I would say my procrastination to start is what makes it difficult.
I have heard of people who plan their writing (outlines, maps, etc.). I am more of a “jumping in” type of person. I start with what I know and the rest just flows.
I do not do much writing willingly. The writing I do is mainly for classes. However, when I do write, I cannot have any noise around me. The only noise I can tolerate would be music but without lyrics – simply instrumental. I cannot concentrate if there is a TV in the background, people talking, or music with lyrics (I am currently writing this with the TV on mute and my boyfriend sleeping – no noise here! Except for his snoring lol)
I prefer to go to the library when writing because it is a quiet place and it helps me think. It forces me to sit down and do my work so I would say my surroundings do help me write. When I am not in the library, I prefer to do my writing at night. It is more relaxing to me.

    1. "Jumping in" works for me too. I don't write a formal outline but after I write the introduction, I'll write a word or two for every paragraph I'm thinking of writing so I don't lose my ideas. And the library is a great place to write! There aren't as many distractions as there are at home.

  28. The essay writing process isn’t difficult for me, but I tend to wait until the last minute to write. I typically like to knock out entire writing assignments in one sitting because it takes a while for me to get started. I like to work in quiet areas (library, coffee shops, etc.) and have everything I need right next to me. I find that my surroundings are very important when I’m writing. I like to sit facing outside or towards people. I love to have a great view, which is why when I go to the library, I always sit on the top floor near the windows. I listen to classical music occasionally, but I find that I focus better with artists like Vance Joy or Ben Howard. The soft lull of their voices helps my writing flow better. I take breaks often, which I think is very helpful for my writing. I won’t get up or go on my phone during my breaks though. I will typically just sit back from my computer and stare outside the window I’m sitting next to. This time helps refocus my mind to my writing. I’ll do this especially if I’m stuck or can’t think of my next sentence. When I come back to whatever I’m writing, I may see my topic in a different perspective or rearrange paragraphs so the over paper flows better. I know I’m very particular about how I write, but it has taken me a long time to figure out what works for me and I am a better writer for it.

  29. For me the writing process is fairly easy. Through the past few years each professor has taught me at least one thing that I'm able to use in my writing. Theres no real pattern for when I write. Generally I write whenever I have the most time. So this can either be in the morning, midday, and even during the night. I don't have any issues when it comes to writing and the time of the day. My general writing environment is quiet. I have tried to listen to music in the past both rock and country but I found myself to be much more distracted. Listening to music lead me to talking if someone was around or surfing the web. Because I don't listen to music I am able to focus much more. Working at home I still have many distractions so I try to do as much homework and writing at the school library where it is peaceful and quiet. When I write at school I get it done much faster and make fewer mistakes. I would say that surroundings effect a persons writing beyond belief. For me it took time and experimenting in different surroundings to notice.

I like how you said that you've learned at least one new thing in writing from each different professor. I am the same way. Just when you think you know everything about writing, or know most of the rules and whatnot, another professor gives you another pointer or tip. Last semester, I had to learn to not use passives from one of my professors and it was challenging. For the most part, however, I did find it helpful and found that my paper seemed to flow better.

  30. For me, the most difficult part of writing an essay is the first paragraph. Once I get started, I typically move through the content fairly quickly. I usually treat writing an essay like preparing for a speech. The time consuming part is doing the research, so I will spend as much time as possible doing the research and organizing my thoughts, making sure that I understand the subject. I do most of my writing, but I will stop off at the nearest college if I am stuck in traffic and write in the library; I travel a lot for work and school. When I am at home, I write at my desk in my remodeled garage to the sound of my laundry if I happen to be writing on Fridays. 32. Writing an essay can be pretty difficult depending on the subject and how important is to me. Before starting I try to be as prepared as possible with knowledge and notes of the subject. I begin with an outline of how I would want or expect it to be so I don't go off of topic. Its easy to get distracted especially if other people are around or there is music or television on. If my family is around I usually talk with them or they will talk to me and ask me questions, if the television is on then I will start to watch it and if music is playing chances are I will end up singing.
The environment plays a huge part when I am writing an essay because I find myself unable to focus if there is too much going on around me. Where I find I am most productive is when I have a quiet place and am left with no distractions, just myself and the work needing to be finished. It gives me so much time to concentrate and actually sort out my thoughts so that I can be clear and concise when putting everything together. When I am alone I can get tasks done so much faster. I really enjoy writing in the morning because I wake up feeling refreshed after a good night's sleep ready to get new ideas flowing.

However, I find once I have a lot of information I am able to write a lot quicker and it is more enjoyable. I just hate doing all the work before hand. It makes it feel almost impossible at the beginning. I would much rather write in the morning in a quite space like my office. I think it is so interesting how people can listen to music when they do any type of homework or study. For me it has to be absolutely quiet. I applaud anyone who can write and listen to music. To be completely honest I've never really loved reading or writing so that makes it hard too sometimes. I think it has to do with the fact I hate to sit still and I love to talk. I would much rather express my feelings and thoughts to a real person standing next to me instead of writing them down.

  34. The writing process for some can be a difficult task, unenjoyable and overall painful. Fortunately for myself the process is very much enjoyable and therapeutic at times. Throughout my education, I have found, that writing has come more naturally. The ebb and flow of putting words on a paper have an ease about it. I even find myself lost in my thoughts and loose track of time. In more stressful situations, when deadline anxiety is high, I find myself relaxed and clearheaded after finishing the writing task assigned.
While I always do my work in the late hours of the night, I can't really say that it is my preferred choice. With two young children at home, the most preductive time to do my writing is anytime they are away or asleep. This is when I am able to focus on what I am working on. I sometimes enjoy listening to music while I write but silence has abled me to focus more and get my work completed sooner. Topics I enjoy writing about would be my children, music, and history. These topics offer up plenty to write about and since they are interesting to me I am more knowledgeable of the material.

I like doing anything dealing with writing late at night for some reason. I am most energetic during the nighttime. I haven’t quite understood it but I just go with it because it works. I’ll have my headphones plugged up into my cellphone to play some music as I’m gathering up information and whatnot. I cannot finish papers if I don’t listen to some sort of music. My go to music choice is R&B/Hip Hop. And it can be any artists. Because it all depends on my mood and the type of vibe I want while writing a paper. Music has been a savior in my life. But as for my actual process. I’ll first, go and do research and pick out quotes and whatnot that’ll catch my eye. Because I am not a fan of researching, but I love to do research papers. It is quite odd. The only thing I dislike with the writing process is the citing. I cite all my sources but I constantly have issues citing them correctly. It can either be a couple small mistakes or a lot of bad mistakes. Because it won’t be plagiarism that’ll get me a C paper, its simply not citing research correctly. I work countlessly on making sure I cite things right and then when I get results back, and it’s not what I wanted it’s very frustrating to say the least. But I’m always working on bettering my writing skills because I do enjoy writing papers and I get pretty good grades on majority of my papers, so I know I am doing something right for the most part.

  36. Writing an essay comes fairly easy to me. What I've had issues with in the past is topic sentences. Once I get the wording right and get the first paragraph done, it essentially becomes an outline to the rest of my paper and I get it done quicker. Another issue is the conclusion. As easy as it is to sum up your paper or reword your first paragraph, designing it to flow properly sometimes takes me longer than I'd like for it to. I can write any time of the day, as long as I'm focused. I cannot concentrate with a busy environment so headphones are my go-to. The variety of music depends on my mood. 37. I don’t know if I would say that the writing process is difficult, more so I make it difficult on myself. I am a huge procrastinator and I always wait until the last minute to start a paper, so that can make it stressful. However, I think I do some of my best work when I’m under pressure. Once I start writing it’s usually smooth sailing from there. I typically will make a short outline with a couple words or a sentence for each paragraph so I have an idea of the direction I want to go in. I have also found it helpful to write my body or supporting paragraphs first, then go back and write the intro and conclusion. For some reason the intro gets me stuck every time so it’s easier for me to skip and come back to. It is also easiest for me to write late at night when everyone else is sleeping. There are six of us in my house so late at night is typically the only quiet time there is. I have tried writing at the library or Starbucks but it just doesn’t work for me. My kitchen table is where I write the best. I also usually have to have the TV on, but have a super low volume. I know it’s weird but I think the background movement helps me focus in some way.

  38. Personally I always find my self struggling writing an essay. It might be because that English is my second language. Starting the essay is always the hardest thing for me. The first sentence in my essay sets me up to continue and keep going to write the piece. If I do get that first sentence down, I come up with the plan; a road-map if you can call it that way. Its funny because I wrote my essay while I was travelling across the country, and As I stopped in Route 66 in New Mexico, I decided to write down some ideas and took notes of the ambiance of the place. I also took note of the things that standout. This helped me later on to write my essay. I had to stop quite of few times writing this essay and comeback to it, this give me time to think about it and gives me fresh ideas for the essay. I like writing my essay where it is nice and quite. I prefer to write my essays outside sitting down under a tree, listening to birds, car passing by, and looking at the beautiful nature. I also have trouble wrapping up my essay.

    2. John, I agree with you that the first sentence is the most important. I also use it as a road map to guide me with the rest of the essay. It's such a relief when the introduction is done. You know you can now finish the rest of the paper with much more ease!

    3. Hi John, english is my second language too and I can relate to your struggle. I have seek help from professors, mentors and friends and everyone recommends reading to become a better writer. Read, read, and read. I take reading allows ourselves to get familiar with words words we have not been exposed to and that is how we become better writers.

  39. I definitely agree with you! it's a great feeling knowing I got my work done at school because once I go home I get distracted by the million things I have to do at home.

  40. I have always enjoyed writing essays, once I get an idea of what I am writing about everything flows. What I struggle with the most is the introduction, I usually have an idea of what I want to write about but I can never put it into words. But once I figure the introduction out I am good to go. I could never write an essay at my own home, which is weird, but I feel as if there are so many distractions that I can never start. I usually start my essay at work during my breaks or in the library. I also can not listen to music when I am writing, I pay more attention to the music than to my writing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In my case, I do not struggle with the introduction. The introduction is one of the easiest parts for me, since I do 5 things: identify the topic, know the purpose of writing the topic, use an attention-getter (like a question, joke, or short story), respond indirectly to the attention-getter (like describing people’s ideas), and state my three-pronged thesis. I am sure this could help you become a confident introductory writer. I find the body paragraphs harder than the introduction and the conclusion. This is because I have to have enough expertise and experience, based on a particular topic. Body paragraphs require a lot of sufficient information, to make essays sound interesting to the audience. Writing compositions reminds me of a cheeseburger, which consists of the following: the introduction (first paragraph/top bun), the body (next three paragraphs/lettuce, burger, and cheese), and finally the conclusion (final paragraph/bottom bun). You could use more body paragraphs, to make your paper more interesting for the audience. This is another tool which makes writing fun. You could try this out.

    2. Zelina, you are lucky, sometimes I want to work on something during my brakes, but I can't, we do not have a quiet area and I do get distracted easily.

      Delete
    3. An introduction can definitely be a bump in the road that makes essays hard to get started. The best idea I could give you is to simply try making an outline and figure out a good thesis statement if it's an essay. For stories, I would suggest establishing a setting or the world, then introducing necessary characters. There's plenty of ways to do it for sure.

  41. For me the writing process has always been difficult. I'm more of a visual and hands-on learner. So taking this class online doesn't make it easier for me. Only because I have to adjust to taking an online course rather than interacting in a classroom setting. Although the assignment is so simple, I struggle with writing. I always like to ask for help and clarification on what the assignment is about. I find that very helpful. Once I know what I need to do, the next thing is to find “my voice” on the topic, and start brainstorming and doing research. Then I double check with the professor if that's a good way to go about my essay, so I know I'm doing the assignment correctly. And once I get that approved it becomes a bit easier to do my essay. I think that's the biggest thing that I find difficult in writing is what is required and what the professor is looking for. Some mechanisms I use to focus better are being aware of my surroundings and settings. But It all depends on what mood I'm in. I like to start out listening to music to get my thoughts moving and then I write them down. I like the cord settings as well. I like to work in the library. Or sometimes I like a little distractions. I like writing, whenever I get a chance to. But the pressure of having a deadline helps as well. It makes me work harder.

  42. The essay writing process can be difficult sometimes but mostly it’s pretty easy. There are different aspects that contribute to it being difficult like staying in the right format like MLA or APA and answering all parts of the prompt. Once the essay is planned out and the style isn’t intimidating then that’s when the process gets easier. I am most comfortable writing in a room where there aren’t any windows. If there are windows, I am constantly looking outside and once it starts getting dark I get tired and don’t want to write anymore. When writing I have to have earphones on with music playing. I usually just listen to any kind of music but if I’m having a hard time getting started then I switch to classical music. I usually keep the music at a volume level where I can’t hear anything else because I don’t like to be distracted by people who talk loud. I can’t write very effectively when I’m on my laptop so I have to write on a desktop so I usually go to the library lower level. My surrounding definitely helps me write. I used to do homework with my friend at her house and I always wondered by I wasn’t able to write essays while I was there. I think that I like being in an environment where I am forced to be quieter than usual like in a library. Once I have an appropriate environment then other aspects that make writing an essay difficult usually disappear.

    1. Hi Crystal,
I heard that listening to classical music is pretty helpful for people. It must be soothing. I personally cannot have music playing while writing, but I always think it's interesting when that is the way some people have to have in order to write. I also agree that knowing the style you are supposed to write in definitely helps. It is hard to remember all the formats, and usually that is the most difficult part for me.

  44. For me, starting the writing process is quite a bit difficult. However, once I motivate myself to start writing, I usually begin a nice flow and finish the paper in one sitting. I think the hardest part about writing for me has never been about the quality of material, but instead the grammatical errors I often makes. So as I have gotten older I have tried to fine tune these errors, but I still struggle with grasping the grammar concept. Another important aspect of writing successfully is a quiet environment. I do not do well with loud music because I usually end up being distracted by the lyrics and lose my focus. I also prefer writing in the evening after my day is over. This way the only thing that is on my mind is the essay, and not what I have to accomplish that day. Another strategy I use before I begin writing the paper is making sure I have a solid grasp of the subject beforehand. If its a research paper I like to read the articles first and highlight important concepts. If its a reflection paper I usually reflect first in my mind what words/stories would be best to put into writing. All in all, I usually enjoy the feeling of being finished with the assignment; it gives you something to be proud of.

  45. I actually enjoy the writing process because I love piecing ideas together. The essay process is not so difficult for me unless I do not know much about the topic that is assigned. I found our first essay a little difficult because I am so used to writing formal. The fact that our essay guideline gave us the ability to write informal made me doubt my writing and I started questioning if I was on topic or not. Despite the fact I did not know how to write informal, I really enjoy writing about food because it forced me to write using all my senses. When it comes to writing, I normally start of with writing ideas down first. The ideas are usually about what I know about the topic, mostly free write. I can free write while listening to piano melodies. Music with this process of my writing is influential. If the prompt is essay format, I develop a thesis once I have research to support it. However, when it comes to proof reading my paper, I print out a hard copy to read out loud. Through out my experience, I have found that reading my paper out loud with everything quite allows me to catch all my mistakes. What is most difficult about my writing and where I need most help is with my syntax.

  46. The writing process itself isn't difficult for me, but it's actually starting the essay that is harder. I have a hard time concentrating and thinking of ideas if the room is loud or I'm not in the mood. It's also easier for me to brainstorm ideas on paper before I start typing it on the computer. I can write a paper very easily if I'm in the library at school where it's quiet and other students are busy doing schoolwork. I feel that this motivates me to get my work done. If I'm at home where my family members are doing other things like watching tv, I can't successfully get anything done. I also cannot listen to music with lyrics while studying, writing, or doing any kind of homework. If I do, I start to listen to the lyrics and become distracted by the music. I have listened to music without lyrics while studying and didn't find it distracting though. Overall, my surroundings definitely help me write because I'm easily distracted when other things are going on.

  47. For me personally, the essay writing process is only difficult depending on the type of essays. Generally, research papers are easier for me. If it is a persuasive essay, it is a little more difficult for me. I am one of the rare people who actually likes to write a couple of days before the essay is due because I find that I write my best when I am writing under pressure. I procrastinate, but I always ending up getting good grades on my essays. I do wish that I gave myself more time during the essay process, so hopefully that is a skill that I will develop eventually. I also have to write in complete silence. I cannot do essays when other people are talking or even if there is background noise. So, I generally end up writing my essays when it is night time so it is quiet and I can concentrate. I will usually write up an outline before I start writing so that I know where to go in my papers. They are generally not too detailed, but contain enough information for me to remember what I wanted to write about in different parts of my essay. Although I do not like writing, I am often told that I am good at it. Maybe I will learn to embrace and enjoy my writing skills one day.

    1. I'm quite the opposite, I prefer persuasive essays rather than research papers. However, I could really relate with the procrastination part. I usually write my papers a day before, unless they're research papers that involve in-depth information and citations. I also write during the night because every time I try writing in the morning I take a lot longer and get easily distracted with other things to do.

    2. I write my essays at night too Angela because it's quieter and I feel more relaxed. If I try to write during the day I feel like I could be doing other stuff. Also, preparing an outline makes the writing process way easier for me. It makes it easier to put it together and then you can add detail from there.

  48. I have always had difficulties in writing essays because construct a format of the main points that need to be discussed in my writing. I also have difficulties trying to use professional words and I believe it is because English is my second language. I feel that I do not know the meaning of many words. When writing an essay it is hard for me to figure out what I need in my introduction. The first sentence is always something easy for me because I always try to start my sentences with something catchy that can attract the reader. I usually start the introduction with a quote, question, a saying, or a short story. After the first sentence in the introduction I always struggle and especially when it comes to constructing a thesis statement. When creating my thesis, I always ask myself can someone argue and disagree with me and as soon as I see that it is debatable; I am set. When my introduction is ready, I feel more confident and have less difficulties writing my essay. Also, I believe I also make fragment mistakes and it frustrates me. I have noticed that procrastinating makes me think quicker and work efficiently; I work better under pressure. I know that it is not good to procrastinate so I try to avoid it. I start my papers ahead of time that way I can have someone revise it; it is helpful. When I write essays I love to be alone and I prefer that there is no noise. I cannot concentrate with music; I need silence.

    1. Hi Denise,

Although English is my first language, I grew up taking bilingual classes in which we had to write essays in Spanish. In this way, I can absolutely identify with your comment regarding how difficult it is to write an essay (especially the beginning) in a second language. I think you write well, judging by this entry. For me, sometimes it helps to just start writing, even if you plan to change it later. It's a great way to just get the wheels turning, so to speak.

  49. I enjoy writing essays, especially if it is one about a topic I get to research and learn new things. My routine normally consists of first putting some comfy clothes on, normally a sweatshirt, sweatpants and some fuzzy socks. If I'm at home I'll make myself a cup of coffee and keep some snacks nearby. I like to listen to calming music, normally the soundtrack I play from Jane Austen's movie, Pride and Prejudice. The soundtrack is very calming and helps me stay focused.

Once I am settled I like to brainstorm and briefly write about which each paragraph will be about. I'll look into my subject and pull some sources next. From there I'm able to sit down, focus and normally write my essay in a short amount of time. I'll take a little break, maybe watch an episode on Netflix and then come back to the essay to proof-read and see if I've made any mistakes.

  51. I find the essay writing process very difficult because it's hard for me to make sense of the ideas I want to express in my writing. Also, I get frustrated during the material searching I need for the particular topic. Furthermore, punctuation and citing are not my strongest abilities. Yet, since I know I have to get the essay done regardless I have a routine I usually follow. First, I take care of all the researching in the mornings when I'm at school. When I get home, already afternoon, I clean my house and feed my boyfriend and stepdaughters. Finally, late afternoon, I go isolate myself in my room, turn on my lavender candle which helps me distress, and begin rough drafting and writing my paper. I usually do this while listening to some music through my headphones. I like listening to Spanish songs, but from time to time I also listen to classical.

  53. For me, some essays can be more difficult than others, depending on my interest in the subject. I have always considered myself a decent writer, and writing has always come relatively easy for me. Once I have an idea of what I would like to say (even if it's not perfect or exact), I just being writing to get the first sentence flowing. From there, it becomes less difficult and I know I can always go back and change it as needed. I like to be in a quiet place with no music typically because I find it a little distracting. If there is music, it has to be something I can't sing along to, because my brain will just begin to fill in the words! What helps me to write is having a format. Either laid out by an instructor (like a rubric), or a format that I have brainstormed. That way, I make sure I cover all the points necessary. In terms of surroundings and ambiance, I really enjoy writing when I can cozy up on my couch or in my bed with a glass of wine or a cup of coffee.

  54. JUST TO CLARIFY, THIS IS FROM YOUR CLASSMATE ROSHAAN...

This is most important comment, my first response which disappeared just to let you know.

The essay writing process is a little bit difficult. The most difficult part of writing is based on designing a really strong thesis statement. This is because designing a thesis statement for a particular topic requires a lot of expertise and personal experiences. If I am not good at my topic, I would have to do a lot more research to educate myself, before I write my thesis statement. I would like to let you know, that I am a person who gets really inspired to write poems, stories, essays, memoirs, reviews, jokes, and personal experiences. I like to write all seven types of compositions at home, in college, and on the train. I prefer to write poems and stories with humor at night, on cloudy and rainy days, and while listening to music. Listening to music helps me write better stories and poems, since they remind me of certain sceneries like the following: the moon, the rain, the grasslands, the livestock, and the mountains. I take these ideas into account, and I write about nature. I then translate them to rhymes, and I turn it into spoken-word poetry. I sometimes write stories based on vacation resorts, Europe, and humor. I plan to write series stories and certain comedies in the future. So far, I have written certain stories which include 7-8 stories in a series. I also like to read European literature novels in my free time. I like to do a lot of British pronunciations, whenever I am not busy. By the way, I enjoyed writing this discussion post.

  57. Personally, the essay writing process can be a bit difficult depending on the topic I'm writing about. The most difficult part about it is the language barrier for me. I feel like I'm still learning the English language, and often times i second guess myself while constructing an essay. Not having enough information on a particular topic can delay the process and causes me to do extra research until i feel comfortable about my work.Once i gather all the proper information needed, then, i start free writing. Finally, i go back and change sentences to haver better flow and/or construction of the essay. Honestly, the surrounding do not affect my essay construction. I can write early in the morning or late at night, as long as i have done enough research my essay should flow pretty smoothly. I do like listening to music as I gather all my ideas. I feel as it helps me concentrate a bit more. As of the type if music, preferably something soothing and relaxing, perhaps instrumental. I enjoy essay construction because i feel I've come a long way in the learning process, while at the same, I know I still have a lot of learning to do.

  58. Writing the paper wasn't difficult overall. I was trying to write it like the reviews we've read before. Trying to gage how much description was too much or too little was difficult. I like to write in my room on my bed which is a terrible habit because I forget to put something under it and it over heats and shuts off. I don't like to listen to music when I write papers because I accidentally start typing the lyrics of whatever song I'm listening to. My process when writing papers is just write whatever comes to mind and keep going until i fulfilled the requirement or until I draw a blank. I really hate rereading my work because I'm over critical of myself unless it's a paper that requires sources. I prefer for other people to read my work and tell me what changes need to be made. If I have no one to ask and it is an emergency I skim over my work. I rarely even reread my own notes or writing I do for fun. I really can't stand it.

GREETINGS AND BASIC COURSE INFO

!!!!NO MEETING THIS SATURDAY!!!! (we will meet later in the semester)

EMAIL: bschmoll@csub.edu

Greetings,

This course has some weekly assignments that you must keep up on. There are also a few other papers and books to read throughout the semester. But if you keep up with the weekly assignments on here, your writing will improve and you will put yourself in a great position to do well in this class!

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline(Saturday) each week. Furthermore, if you are in the habit of writing everything on Saturday you will not receive full credit. Why? There would be no time for others to interact with your writing. Write early; write often! Right? Right!

HERE IS THE WORK THAT MUST BE COMPLETED EACH WEEK...

FIRST, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

SECOND, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

THIRD, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS IN PART THREE EACH WEEK.
