WEEK ELEVEN

What is your first memory of school? I recall being pushed on the swing by my mother at Longfellow elementary, the one on Union Ave (east side!) and then I turned around and my mother was gone--sad face. But I remember something from preschool also, so that may not be my earliest school memory. What are your first and most indelible early school memories? Did those first impressions of school stay with you or did you change your thinking about school at some point? Did you have a teacher who made you hate/love school?

  1. My first memory of school is recess as a kindergartner. I remember at my old elementary school, Mountain View (Visalia, CA), had several metal pipe structures to play on. The two I was always on were the submarine and the school bus. They were both painted and the paint was fading, yellow for the bus and green for the submarine. They were the two structures that every kid wanted to be on. Another memory I have is sitting in the sandbox outside of the classroom playing and a classmate of mine came up and bit me in the arm. He was the class bully and was always in trouble for doing bad things. As far as a favorite teacher, I would have to fast forward to high school and blame my Agriculture Mechanics teacher from my junior and senior year for my major. She saw my potential when she saw the depth I went into when building things and she pointed me to the direction I am now about to accomplish, which is a Bachelors of Engineering.

    1. Devon, I wish I can have a better memory of my old school days but unfortunately I don't. But if anything I would've chose a teacher in high school as well but for me they were all equally good to me and to the rest of the class.

    2. Devon, I remember those play structures also. And yes, they were by far the most popular play yard toys. Here in Bakersfield, most students would happily burn their hands and legs just to hang all over them.

    3. The playgrounds were great places to be as a child.

It is great to see that one of your teachers had an impact in your life and that influenced your major, I myself had the opportunity to come across a great teacher which also influenced many of the academic decisions I have made.

    6. Devon,

You wrote a very nice story. This is because you wrote stories, which had a great sense of humor. I really enjoyed some of them. It was also nice that you shared the fact that your Agriculture Mechanics teacher, insisted that you should do a four-year engineering degree. In my case, I had so many memories in school. Some of these memories were nice, and some of these memories were not so great. In school, I watched a lot of nice, humorous, and adventurous movies. I even wrote and recited poetry in elementary school, middle school, high school, and even last year. School and college are both fun learning environments, and I am looking forward to the workplace as well. There may be interesting inventions in the future, like the following: robots, flying cars, and brand new video games. I realized that everyone had both good and bad memories in school, and that a particular person can change his/her perspective (into a good perspective), no matter how many bad memories there are.

  2. Well my first memory of school, geez I can’t even remember my phone number and you want me to go back in time to remember about school HA! Anyways I honestly can seem to remember much about elementary school or my golden age years HA! But my mother always tells me stories about my first day as a kindergarten student, she recalls dropping me off and me crying loud telling her to come back and I would just throw a huge tantrum, she tells me that the only way she kept me in school was to blackmail me telling me if I didn’t stay in school and learn something she was going to throw away my power rangers costume according to her I got up from the floor and went back to class and sat down like nothing ever happen. The most indelible early school memories, well like I mentioned previously I honestly don’t remember much about those days I do remember being a very proactive child but also a very sad child (for personal reasons) other than that I honestly don’t like going back a remembering certain things as a child. Well as a child nobody wants to go to school let’s put it that way because all we want is our mommies and daddies and working with children I have learn that a child only wants to feel wanted and loved while away from their parents but for me I always liked school even now as an adult being in college is a new experience and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Yes I’ve learn new things along the way but ultimately that’s what makes me who I am. To be honest all my teachers made me want to go to school all the time even here in college well some of them HA! But for the most part I enjoyed every single teacher I had.

    1. Joaquin, Isn't it funny how our minds work? I can't recall to awfully much about my early years either. I just remember very prominent things that may or may not have happened. I agree with you that college is a new experience. I have never appreciated learning the way I do now. I enjoy it so much more as an adult.

    2. Jaime, I know its like now as an adult you know exactly what's going on in the world as opposed to being a child we don't know what's happening we might be aware of it but we actually don't pay as much attention as we do know and I think education is the most important thing in the world.

    3. I remember crying for my mom the first day too. The "Golden Years" haha I know what you mean!

    4. Nich, yes those were the good old days and its weird because we cry when we first start school but have you noticed leaving the nest is the parents who cried when their child leaves to school.

    5. Joaquin, I think we most of us can relate to crying on our first day of school. If we think about it at a young age we are taught that we have to learn things on our own and that our parents aren't always going to be there to help us.

    6. Hi Joaquin,
I think I can also relate to crying on your first days of school. I remember crying when my parents dropped me off. However, I would cry because I felt lost when I could not communicate with everyone since I did not speak english. Those days were very tough for me.

  3. When thinking back on my childhood and my educational experiences my memories are few and far between. I have memories from my time in preschool. I had to be around three or four years old if not closer to five. My preschool was in an old church building with a small play yard consisting of a metal play house and tricycles. I also remember having breakfast and not licking the oatmeal that seemed to always be served. I also remember brushing my teeth at school, of all things. One memories that I think is my own was taking part in a school play of the Three Little Pigs. The reason why I say I think it is a memory is because I have seen an old home video of the play that my grandma recorded, so I am not sure if it is an actual memories of the event or a memory created from watching the video. Fast forward a few years to my time in Kindergarten. I have one memory that still sticks with me to this day. I remember one little boy who was always in trouble. I remember that the teacher, with permission from his mother, would spank the little boy and sit him under the piano. I to this day still remember the little boys name. I would say this particular memory really shaped my attitude towards classroom behavior. I always tried to behave and do my best. I was very concerned with receiving the same type of punishment. All of my teachers were very giving and loving. I did not love school growing up, but I was always happy to go. I could honestly say my past teachers have impacted me so much so that I am now pursuing a career in education myself.

it's crazy that you got to witness the teacher spanking that little boy,
I am sure if I would have been in your position it would have impacted me in the same way, I was never a trouble maker but seeing such thing would have definitely made me scared!

  4. My earliest memory of school is as a Kindergartener. I live in Porterville and I went to Burton Elementary school. I had a really pretty teacher who's name was Mrs. Lollis. I remember my mom dropping me off at school and waiting in line with me. I was wearing a yellow dress with flowers, white sandals, and my glasses. I was only 4 years old and really excited to start school. I believe I went to school around 8 am and got out around noon. My mom was definitely the more nervous one; she thought I was going to cry when she tried to leave. I faintly remember her telling me she was going to leave and I said "okay" and kept playing with my new classmates. To this day, my mom tells me she was sad that I didn't care she was leaving which always makes me laugh. Although, as I got older I began to become sad when she dropped me off at school. I think because school wasn't as fun then since it became more work.

  5. My first and most indelible early school memories would be in Kindergarten, I clearly remember my mom packing lunch for me and how much I used to love it. I also remember all the friends I had and how I used to always love going to school. I was never one of those kids that complained about waking up early to go to school, I used to love going to school and I used to love learning something new everyday. School was like a new adventure everyday for 5 year old me. However, those first impressions of school did change as I grew up and I began to realize that there was more to it; school can be tough at times especially as one grows up because the peers around you can be harsh. Middle school is my next memory, that is when one begins to think we are old enough to understand the world but yet we are far from that. Also dating is considered to be the "cool" thing to do even if we are still young and when your parents have never talked to you about dating one can make the wrong decisions. However, I did have a teacher who made me love middle school and not necessarily because of the people but because she always believed in me and pushed me to reach my highest potential; she believed and knew I was capable of achieving a lot in life. Her name was Mrs. Costello, she was one of the main influencers in my decision to go to College. She always gave me the best advice and was supportive. Academically I achieved a lot during middle school thanks to her and that stayed with me all throughout High School and now college. To this day, I wish I could go back and visit her and let her know that I am about to receive my College degree, I know she would be proud of who I've become and what I have accomplished. Mostly I want her to know that all her hard work and dedication matters and that all her advice was not taken for granted. I want her to feel appreciated because to this day I still think about her advice and I it makes me stronger whenever I come across hardships.

  6. My favorite memory of school would probably have to be my kindergarten year. Back when I was in kindergarten it was fun because we were able to take naps, do a lot of art projects, and play. Who wouldn't love this grade level. This is where kids had fun and met new friends. Now a day kindergarten does not seem that fun like it used to be. As I got older I began to enjoy middle school more then any other grade beside kindergarten because the teachers were great. I had this math teacher in seventh grade and he made math so enjoyable and easy to understand. Math actually became my favorite subject because of this one teacher. My first impressions of school were good but I can't say that all the years were great. But I always knew how important it was in life to finish school and to get a degree. I met some great teachers who made learning fun and easy and these are the teachers that made an impact in my life. I met teachers who would challenge me and encourage me to follow my dreams and goals and not to ever give up. I didn't really ever hate school but I didn't love it either. I hated waking up early in the mornings but now I'm an adult and know how important education is. School isn't easy but what makes it great are instructors who are willing to put the time and effort on their students and help them succeed in life.

  8. My first memory of school was when I was in kindergarten or preschool. I do not remember the exact grade but I do remember getting in trouble. During recess, we used to play kickball out in the field. This field had a backstop that was huge! Well, it was huge at the time and while we were really into our game, it was my turn to kick the ball. I remember my friend passing the ball to me and with all my might, I kicked the ball. It was a direct hit that sent the ball flying. It flew up in the air and was going over the fence until it got stuck on a piece of barbed wire. I managed to nearly kick it out of the park but it was stopped by the sharp blades of a fence. Slowly, as the air began to deflate, I felt my stomach getting sicker and sicker. I knew I was going to get in trouble and eventually I did. When recess was over I told the teacher that I had popped the ball. I wanted to lie, but just could not, due to the many witnesses that saw me. When the teacher found out what happened I got in trouble by being on purple. Purple was a color that was close to red and red was a very bad color to be on. Since that ball popping, I shaped up my attitude and controlled myself a little more. I used to not like school but now I enjoy learning.

  9. My first memory of elementary school was in my first grade class. I'm from Fresno, so our Spring/Summer is hot and dry. We came into the classroom from recess on a particularly hot day and everyone was sweaty from playing and running. All of the kids were tired and hot. I remember our teacher turned the lights off, turned the AC on, played some calming music, and had everyone sit at their desks with their head down for about ten minutes. I had just switched teachers, so I remember thinking that this was a little weird. Then I looked around the classroom and everyone had their heads down, resting. I always thought that transitional period between playing and learning was such a good idea. I'm glad I had a teacher that made an effort to incorporate different practices in her classroom to make her students more comfortable.

  10. My first memory of elementary school memory is when I met my first best friend. We met in pre-school an my love thought she was so cute. I don't remember all the circumstances of us meeting but we were inseparable for like thirteen years after that. I remember that she introduced me to her friends and we were a close knit group until high school. I remember I spent most of my time alone wondering around the playground watching all the others kids play. I was a people watcher an I found people interesting and having eczema made it difficult to make a whole lot of friends. I made friends with the adults on campus; the teachers and staff. I wasn't a lonely kid or a bored kid which is kind of funny looking back on it.

  11. My first and most indelible memory was that in kindergarten my teacher would reward us if we finished our class work early by playing heads up seven up. Heads up seven up was a game about seven students were chosen to touch another students thumb while they put there head down on the desk. Then the student who had their head down had to pick who touched their thumb and if they chose correctly then they got to switch spots. This game may seem irrelevant but the teacher gave us an incentive to finish our class work early and if time was left we would be rewarded by playing games. If we didn't do our homework then we were punished by not having recess. Those impressions stayed with me which helped me on not being a procrastinator and getting work done at an early time. I did have one teacher who made me love school because she made learning fun. Every week who ever got more stars would be the student of the week and got a personal desk and made students feel special that hard work pays off.

  12. My first memory of school was when I was in preschool. I remember my mother and father dropping me off and leaving me there to go to work; I remember just coloring, doing simple drawings, and having to take naps. I hated it and, as in the video, I believe that it was the beginning of the killing of my creativity. Thank goodness that I lived in a unique place, at a unique time that fostered creativity outside of the school setting. My tenth grade teacher was the one that left a mark on me and made me fall in love with math. I can’t think of a specific event in the class, but she had a way of explaining things that just made me do well, and left me wanting more. Then there was my biology teacher that fostered my love of nature. With the ocean and the forest within walking distance, I was able to gain a good understanding of what it really means to be free. Once I found school interesting early on, I never looked back. Even when I was in the army, I enrolled in every class possible, within my time constraints. As I sit here and write this today, school is still having a huge impact on my life; heck, it is how I found this thought provoking video about education, through this class.

    3. Albion,

You wrote a wonderful post. This is because you shared pleasant memories in school, like the facts about your biology and math teachers (who inspired you). Studying natural sciences, like biology, chemistry, and physics is essential to understanding nature (plants, bodies of water, people, animals, and the sky). It makes people feel relaxed, gives people fresh breathers, and causes people to wonder about natural laws, God, and the universe. It was also a nice fact that your math teacher explained a lot about math, which turned out to be one of your strengths. Creativity is needed in certain school subjects (like Composition, World Art, Physics, and Chemistry), and it is less needed in subjects like American History. The idea of creativity depends on the individual’s point of view, and every point of view is unique. In my experience, I enjoyed spoken-word poetry, story-writing, nice movies, and almost every single subject in school. I enjoyed math, sciences, and the arts when I was in school. Some moments in school were funny, and some of the other moments were excellent. I also enjoyed playing the piano for a very long period of time. This is also one of my favorite hobbies.

  14. My first memory of school was from preschool. I remember they would take us outside and I remember that me and my friends would look around in the sandboxes for gecko eggs. Every once in a while, we would find some, and we would all be so happy! Finding gecko eggs was the best part of preschool. I think that the social aspect of school and how much I enjoyed that part always stayed with me. Throughout the years, I loved to be at school and to hangout with my friends. I didn't go to school just because of my friends because I also love to learn but that has always been a highlight for me. I have to say that all of my elementary school teachers were amazing, but there was one that everyone loved. My second grade teacher was my favorite. When we were learning the multiplication tables, if we got enough right on the quiz we would get a cut out of a piece of some compilation of food. For example, if we did well on one quiz we would get the cut-out of only the bowl to an ice cream sundae. If we did well on the other quizzes we would get the cut-outs to the ice cream and then the banana, etc. Whenever we were done earning all of our cutouts, she actually let us make ice cream sundaes in class! Who doesn't love a teacher who rewards you with food?! She was just an all around great teacher. She also had this little neon light sign that read "Fresh made cookies," right in kitchen window of her house so everyone who rode by on their bikes could see it. She would turn it on whenever she had made cookies and we would all just stop by whenever we saw it on. We got cookies and some amazing company. I loved second grade because of her!

  15. My first memory of school is nothing that happened at school, but rather something that happened at my house on the morning of my first day of preschool. I can honestly still remember as if it were yesterday. I remember my mom getting me up, dressing me, feeding me, and talking to me to get prepared. As she was doing this I was all pumped up ready to go. But when the time came, my mom could not find me anywhere in the house. I was hiding under a pile of laundry that my mom had just put on top of her bed. I was hiding cause I did not want to go to school anymore. When it came down to it, the thought of being somewhere alone without my mother for a whole day frightened me. I find it so funny that my mom was literally going crazy thinking I had walked out the front door and ran away. She even called my dad to tell him that she had thought that I had run away or something had happened to me. Once she finally found me, she took a picture of me, and she still has that picture till this day. She says once I finish school she'll blow that picture up and tell me, "look how far you have come."

    5. Christian,

I really enjoyed your story. The reason for this is that you expressed your story with a nice sense of humor. I really like funny stories, since they make me feel good. Your story was enjoyable, and it contained a wonderful memory. As time passed by, my life memories became remarkably better. I had a lot of good memories, even though some of my memories were not great. When I performed spoken-word poetry, I found it enjoyable, funny, and creative. Playing the piano was also one of my greatest memories in life. Playing the piano made me feel relaxed, peaceful, and joyful. Poetry and music make everyone feel relieved, calm, and strong-hearted. Acting in a school play is also another problem-reliever, because it helps people improve their memory. Acting in a school play develops people’s humor, since it requires a lot of bloopers and retakes. I also remember singing “Lazy Day” and “Never Land” in my art class, for my social project. I sang these songs, because I wanted to represent nature. I also performed spoken-word poetry as another part of my art social project as well. This took place in June of 2016. In my opinion, some people can answer this blog question in many different ways.

  18. The first memory I have of school is signing the Mexican National Anthem “Mexicanos, al grito de Guerra”. I attended pre-school while living in Jalisco Mexico until I was seven years old. The national anthem was sung with a traditional dance around the flag every morning before starting class. I had fun and learn fluent Spanish while attending school in Mexico. Learning Spanish has been very beneficial for me. I am grateful to have attended pre-school in Mexico because I now speak two languages. Unfortunately, that is all I remember. The most vivid memory I have about my favorite teacher was in high school. My 11th grade English teacher, Mrs. Holister, truly inspired me. She read the newspaper for us every day before starting class. I still remember the books we read while being in her class. We read The Great Gatsby, Frankenstein, The Odyssey, and Of Mice and Men. I know reflect back and realize how incredible her selection of books was. Mrs. Holister inspired me for so many reasons, she had a heart of gold, she was always prepared, she was so passionate about her teaching, and it seem as if she was wonder woman because she knew a little about everything. Mrs. Holister does not know how much she inspired me nor she knows that she was the reason I continued my education. I believe that people like Mrs. Holister, people who touch our soul will always be the most vivid memory in both our mind and heart.

  20. I attended Golden Hills Elementary school in Tehachapi which takes me back to my earliest memory. I remember in kindergarten every day getting time to play outside. Being a boy me and my friends always had to ride the tricycles around the entire playground and for some reason it just never got old. I remember doing this from the first day and all the way through the program. I also remember always running through the middle of the swing sets as other kids would be swinging and try not to get plowed over. Other then that all of preschool and learning in kindergarten is pretty much a blur. My first impressions of school pretty much stayed the same all I ever cared about was recess and getting to go home. I had an amazing kindergarten teacher but school just was never my thing. I remember asking my mom every day if I had to go and the answer was always the same. But in the end I missed probably two days of school in 12 years and that has been something that most people have a hard time with. Attendance has definitely made me who I am today as it gave me the ability to have amazing work ethic and a passion to work. I truly believe school isn't for everyone but your parents are the main factors in how far you will go and how much you can achieve.

  21. This is an unfair question, it has been so long for me, that is hard to recall. I think my earliest memory is from kindergartner. I remember going to recess with the other classes, and by the time I needed to go back to my classroom, I got lost. I didn’t know where my classroom was, or who was my teacher. The other memory I have is when I was on 1st grade. It was January 6th, the day of the Reyes Magos (it’s like Christmas for children in Mexico). My sister and I didn’t want to go to school so we could stay and play with our new toys. Because my mom did not allow us to stay, we had to become with a plan. As we were on our way to school, we found a puddle of dirty water. Oh yes, we dropped our bags in it, we jumped in it until we were all wet. We agreed on telling mom that some kids pushed us into it, and that our teachers didn’t allow us to get into the classroom because we were wet. Of course y mom did not believe any of it. She was so mad that our toys disappeared for several days, and she ended up taking us back to school.

  23. Jose,
Definitely agree with you on the aspect of how we can remember our young years but when it comes to our most recent experiences is different, I think it has a lot to do with the fact that as young kids we have no worries and we tend to only focus on the events whereas for the most part adults have so much going on that it is a lot harder to maintain certain information for such long period of time.

  24. When thinking back to my first school memories, all I remember is the early morning routines prior to getting to school. I attended kindergartner while living in Sinaloa, Mexico. Every morning, my mom would get me up early in the morning to shower, get ready, and eat a good breakfast before school every day. Looking back, I get a big smile on my face because even though we were fairly poor, my mother always made the clothes I had look the best possible. After eating my oatmeal and "licuado,"(fruit smoothie)she'd walk me to school and would tell me to pay attention and listen to my teacher if I wanted to grow up to be "a pretty and smart young woman." Those walks were the highlight of my day, because she always had great stories and words of wisdom that were great to listen to for a six year old girl.

  25. My first memory of school is the day in preschool when a classmate taught me how to fold an origami crane. I remember feeling absolutely entranced and fascinated by how a simple square paper can be manipulated into something so beautiful. I was also amazed at how my classmate was so knowledgeable about folding paper at such a young age. School in China was much more difficult and strict than school in the United States. I used to believe that school was hard and it was all work and no play. However, once I experienced American schools, I completely slacked off and became all play and no work. That being said, my impression of school definitely changed. Throughout the years, I have had many amazing teachers who made me love going to their classes. The best teachers, in my opinion, are always the ones who are passionate about the subject they teach, the ones who actively tries to keeps their students engaged and interactive, and the ones who are good-looking. I have had a few teachers who made me despise going to class. They are usually the ones who go off on a tangent or unorganized and without a decent lesson plan. I always viewed school as something that is mandatory and pointless, so I sometimes resent it a lot. However, through school I met a lot of new people and learned the bulk of my life lessons and social skills. I love and hate school.

  26. I grew up in Visalia, California and one of my favorite memories growing up was in kindergarten; my teachers name was Mrs. Christensen and she was an absolute angel. I remember loving to come to school everyday and anytime she needed a helper I would always have my hand up first. She is truly the reason why I love to read so much; I remember when she'd the class books she'd do all the fun little voices which made me love her all the more. I have so many pictures with all my awards she gave me that year, and I can truly say that I'm so thankful to her for sparking a desire to continue to push myself educationally. She is the epitome of an amazing kindergarten teacher, she was so patient and kind but most importantly would take her time teaching those who had a hard time. I think kindergarten teachers are so important because they can shape the way that a child views education.

  27. The first faint memory I have of my schooling days was my aunt dropping me off for my first day in Kindergarten at Sierra Vista Elementary School in Arvin. It was a scary experience because I never went to preschool, so this was my first time being in a school. What made it worse was that it was not my parents who were dropping me off. They were stuck working in the fields (field workers usually start working around 5 or 6am). They asked my aunt to take me because she owned a hair salon and was free for the morning. I don’t remember much after that except the times when I would play on the Jungle Gym during recess. I don’t have any classroom memories for that year.
First grade is where I have classroom memories. I remember switching classes about three times because there was a girl with the exact same name I have and they kept messing up our classes. Such a pain! Lol. They even switched our ID’s when we got to high school and we had to hunt each other down during breaks.
The school being a scary experience impression did not stay with me. I actually enjoyed school as a child because I got along with all my teachers and they always gave me good feedback, which made me feel smart. Now, I’m more neutral towards what I feel about school. I enjoy some classes but I dread others. However, I know it is what I must do to have a better education and (hopefully) find a better job.

  28. My first memory of school was in kindergarden. My school my was called Dolores Mission, I had two teachers their names were teacher Eva and teacher Maria. That is how they wanted us to call them by their first name not their last. My two teachers were completely different from each other, teacher Eva was very sweet, caring, and patient with her students. On the other hand, teacher Maria was the strict one, she would always expect us to know certain things by the time we reached kindergarden. She was quick on punishing us and putting us on time out before hearing to the two sides of the story. She was not a very nice teacher and many of my classmates felt the same way. I also remember how much I looked up to the older kids who at the time were 4th and 5th graders. I was always curious to know what kinds of things they were learning in their class and how their teachers were like. Overall, I loved my school because I was able to continue with the majority of my classmates who I had since kindergarden up to our 8th grade year. We had so many great memories that we shared throughout ours years spent there. I was fortunate enough to develop a close relationship with many of them and to this day we still keep in touch.

I remember both my mom and dad took me to my first day of preschool and my mom was so sad to leave me there because i was her only child and she hadn't been working at the time. When my parents took me inside I immediately ran and started to play with the toys. My mom was so shocked because she thought that I would be scared and would cry. My dad claims he knew I was going to do good and school but I'm sure he was a little shocked to see me adapt so quickly. That first day was great because my teacher was a nice old lady and I remember having snack time with all the kids outside on the grass. I remember at the end of the day when they came to pick me up they were so excited to see me and we even went to go get ice cream after. Best first day of school ever!

I think the parents can influence things like fear or anxiety about going to school, if they demonstrate that in front of their children. It's great that you were able to adapt so quickly. Children are very resilient and able to make friends with anyone at such a young age. It is kind of sad how that changes as we get older.

  31. I remember far back to kindergarten when my mom would wake me up early enough to be able to watch Tarzan and Recess (PBS shows) while I ate my cereal. Then I would choose my own uncoordinated outfits to get ready for school. My sister would drop me off and I remember every time she would walk away I wanted to cry. We had to stand in a straight line outside of the classroom before we were able to go in. I really liked my teacher and the teachers assistant. I remember when we would practice our ABC's, we had to do gestures that went along with an animal that had the same first letter. For example A for alligator and we would use our arms as the alligators mouth clamping open and shut. I also recall being excited for the letters M and P because for some reason those were my favorite. M was for Mouse and we had to pretend we were eating cheese, and P was for Penguin and we had to waddle around like one. Thats my earliest memory, but my favorite teacher was an elementary 3rd grade teacher. I was a very shy student and hardly ever spoke in class, but I would always draw behind my homework. One day my teacher printed one of my drawings onto one of those clear sheets of papers that were placed on top of those old overhead projectors. He would do that every Monday and the whole class would think it was cool and wanted me to draw for them. I'd say after that year, I really loved to draw and felt happy that people encouraged me to keep practicing. I mean now I'm an art major, so you could say it really inspired me!

  32. My first memory of school would have to be walking to pre-school in San Francisco with my mother. It was down the street from where we lived I remember being happy to be going to school. The pre-school had play houses inside and I loved laying in the cots we had for nap time. Another memory I had was in first grade, my mom was there during lunch time and we were eating in the outside auditorium that was sunken into the ground she had brought me chicken nuggets and I was very sad to see her leave. We hardly got fast food from my mom so maybe that’s why I remember this so much. We then moved to L.A. and I remember my mom (again) trying to bring me lunch but for some reason she was not allowed to enter, I hated school them and thought of it as a prison. My memories when I was young are mostly of my mom visiting me at school, I probably remember this the most because she was not able to do it very often. The teacher I most remember was here in Bakersfield when I was in 4th or 5th grade I participated in the Math Bowl and I loved doing math with him and my team even though we lost and I cried because I felt so disappointed in myself. Since then I have enjoyed doing math and figuring out problems even I am not the best at it.

  33. It was a rainy morning when my mom, grandmother, and I went to my first day of kindergarten in what seemed to be a huge, ginormous building in Detroit Michigan. It was a public school, whose name I cannot recall, but remember the dark red and brown colored bricks, and how high up it went. Being a four year old, I can only assume the building wasn't as "huge" as I recalled it being.
Due to difficulties between divorced parents, I was pulled from that school and placed in another school in suburban Detroit, named Fairlane Elementary School. I can recall a stark contrast between the nicer, more child friendly, newer suburban elementary school, as opposed to the huge, dreary, K-12 building I left when custody was switched. I don't remember the kindergarten teacher from the school in Detroit, but I do remember the teacher in the other kindergarten class I attended, her name was Mrs. Speck. 46 years later and I still remember her name. I have always liked school, and your questions causes me to wonder if I has stayed at the public school in Detroit, would my views of school had been different being other than remembering the school was older and big, I remember nothing else about it, as opposed to the suburban public school I went to and being able to remember much more.

  34. I think my most indelible fist memory of school was when I was in first grade. I attended a school in Mexico, we did not really have a playground but we would play outside in the street. The school was next to a gully, which was kind of dangerous if you played nearby. I remember I hated that school, it was ugly it almost looked like an old two story house; the classrooms were small and crowded. However, what is most unforgettable is the teacher, who was mean, strict and hard to please. I remember struggling in her class and not enjoying it. It is sad to think that beginning my school career I already did not like it. I think she would hit kids that did not behave; I was never one of them, thankfully. My first impressions did make me hate school. I was probably not smart enough because I would struggle so much and my mom would reinforce my dislike for school, when she would sit with me with to do homework and would end up with a type of beating (I know, bad way to teach a child) when I could not learn something. I honestly mostly hated all my elementary school years when I was in Mexico that is why I have very little memories of them, because I bury them away. However, it changed when I started middle school in the United States I think it was the fact that I was better in my English and I had made a few good friends that made going to school more enjoyable. Also my teachers were fun and interactive which made me like going to school and looking forwards to learning new things.

I remember it was 1989 one of our teachers would play one of our teachers would play Michael Jackson's Thriller and we would dance during play time. I also remember there were tricycles to ride around on the black top, there was a sand pit, and there was a circular concrete wall that I was one of the few kids who could climb it being taller than most. My father told me I was speaking Farsi one day when he picked me up in the afternoon. I know children at a young age are perceptive and able to learn other languages I think that is very interesting fact because I don't remember it that well. I also remember the cots that we had to take naps on. I never was able to sleep because I wanted to play with the other kids. I have a distinct memory of the first day of kindergarten when I walked to school with my grandmother and our dog Spike. I remember the night before I had my clothes and backpack ready for the big day. When I first got to school my mom told me to be a good girl and that if I had any questions to ask the teachers aid because she was Spanish-speaking. My first language was Spanish and had no English knowledge. To my luck most of my classmates spoke Spanish so I enjoyed kindergarten for the first days. Then my mom began to have trouble in waking me up to go to school. I would always lie and tell her I was not feeling good also I would go to the nurses office often but this strategy did not last long. I recall walking down the street with anger because I had to go to school and would throw my backpack to the ground. I have pictures where my sister appears carrying my backpack for me because she cared about me. I think my problem was that I did not understand English and my teacher did not speak Spanish because when I dominated the language, which was quick, I enjoyed school. I had a teacher that made me loved school and that was my 1st grade teacher, her name was Mrs. Taquchi. She was a Chinese teacher and was about 4 feet tall. I was a bully to her and I regret it. The memory I remember so well was when I got proposed to! I know it may sound funny, but he seriously knew what a proposal was. It was a very early morning, it was before school to be exact, my brother and I were hanging out in the basketball courts. My classmate was around there and he was talking to us when, out of no where, he got down on one knee and said “Bianca, will you marry me?” I was in complete shock! I was not expecting that. While I was surprised, my brother was laughing at me so hard. He thought the whole things was so funny. I still remember the proposal so clearly. By the way, I did not accept, I wasn’t ready for that type of commitment; nor did I know what that meant. Back then I was more outgoing so I shook off the whole situation like nothing. It didn’t change who I was. I kept talking to him the same way and everything went as normal. I don’t think anyone remembers the proposal anymore. I was a student who actually enjoyed learning and the idea of learning. I also enjoyed helping and trying to show my fellow classmates. Ever since I was little, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher.

The first memory I have is when I would chase one boy around the play ground at recess. I don’t remember what his name was but I know I had a crush on him. The second memory I had was on Dr Suess Day where we ate green eggs and ham that my teacher made. Another memory I had was attending the Greg and Steve show, which I absolutely loved! I remember loving it even more because my mom came along. The last memory I had was on Valentine’s Day, I remember walking to each individual decorated cereal box and dropping off cards. My first impressions of school stayed with me for a while because all the holidays would be celebrated at school but as I got older my thinking changed. The teachers stopped celebrating holidays all together and just went about their days without even mentioning anything. My teacher I had in preschool made me love school. School then didn’t consist of homework but a lot of arts and crafts. I think this a big reason why I am always in crafty projects. I really enjoy all the memories that I have of school because that is when it was all easy.

  42. My earliest memories of school are many glimpses from the past, I am unsure if they are in the same year, but I do know that it was in the same school. It was either kindergarten or preschool, but I remember sitting on one of those carpet rugs that had shapes and numbers on it. I remember sitting on an orange octagon and this girl was not happy about it. She pushed me over, and me being super tiny I was pushed over easily by this, shall we say hefty female. The teacher tried to resolve this problem by telling me to sit there tomorrow. However, looking back, I’m sure I forgot about it and just sat somewhere else. I remember saying I love homework when I was in elementary school, because I was sent home with connect the dots and coloring. How much I look back and tell myself how could I say something like that. I have mixed feeling about school, I honestly love being in school sitting down and not having to put in physical work and mainly talking and being intellectually challenged. However, reading and writing (specifically) is more draining than lifting heavy objects. But working all day every day for 6 days in a row makes me realize I can’t work in a minimum wage job forever and need a better education.

    1. Hi Stephanie, homework for early education should be as fun as it was for you. This education/schooling thing is not easy for some of us. But for sure its worth the trouble.

  43. I have lots of memories from my younger years in school. I did go to preschool and I remember the distinct smell that came with lunch time. I don’t know how to describe it, but I do remember it. I also remember my very first friend, Kyanna. We became friends because we had the same last name, but after preschool we ended up at different elementary schools so we lost touch. My grandmother was also a kindergarten teacher, so around the same time that I was in preschool I remember going and visiting her class as well. I went to the same elementary school that my grandma taught at, but she had moved grades by the time I got there so I didn’t get to have her as a teacher. It was a super small k-8 school that only had one teacher for each grade and for the most part the same 20-30 kids would go through school together. My first memory there would be on the first day school I got to take the attendance folder up to the front office. I have a pretty good memory, so I remember quite a bit from elementary school, but those are probably my earliest memories from school. As a kid I always loved school. I always had good grades and it was something that came easy for me. I think I stopped enjoying school around 8th grade. I had changed schools and it was more challenging for me to get good grades and I was away from my friends. In high school I was reunited with my friends and generally still got good grades, but I didn’t enjoy it like I did in elementary school.

  44. I think my earliest known memory in school was probably whenever I was taken to my first day of elementary school. It was in Thursgood Marshall Elementary School in Oakland, where I was taken by my mom to Room 3 for Ms. Slater's class. The story is actually quite similar to the example one given, since I reluctantly clinged onto my mom begging her not to go. Of course, as she went, I was sad for the first hour or so, but eventually, I was able to compose myself and keep going through class. Funnily enough, I don't know why I was so sad when she left. Didn't I go through preschool and kindergarten? It's a weird memory, but it's something that always stuck with me as something to laugh back at. Maybe if I have kids, they'll be the same way, but I don't have any immediate plans for kids anytime soon.

    1. I was always really shy and didn't want my mom to leave either. If it was up to me at 6 years old I would've liked to me home schooled. My mom on the other hand enjoyed her time away from us three kids for a few hours. Lol.

  45. My first memory of school is terrible. My mom dropped me off for kinder garden and I started to cry. I got upset (I had a very bad temper) and threw a chair at my teacher. I should have never done that because after this she made me sit on her lap as she read a book to us. Worst day of my life. So that is one of my first memories of school and it's funny to talk about now.

Although I do feel bad for "kindergarten Jason," I couldn't help but laugh at this ! "Worst day of my life" haha! It's amazing how our first memories of school are still so prominent in our minds. I hope school has gotten better for you since, and no chairs have been thrown!

  46. I remember preschool very well. I had a teacher named Ms. Janie who I absolutely loved. She was fun, and warm, and would comfort me when I was crying because I didn't want to leave my mom when she would drop me off. I was only about three or four years old, which may have been too early for me to go to preschool, but my mom was working at the time so it was the best arrangement. I remember hating it some days, and loving it some other days. Overall though, I think it really did make me love going to school, because I have (mostly) enjoyed it ever since. My favorite teacher from my early days, who had a huge influence on my love for school, was my fourth grade teacher Mrs. Cullen. She was so funny, and really had a passion for teaching. She made me want to be a teacher at the time. I have since chosen a career in nursing, but one day I may want to be a nurse educator; I think a lot of that has to do with Mrs. Cullen!

I also struggled leaving my mom when I first started school haha! It's funny how that changes pretty quickly. I'm glad someone inspired you to find a love for school. I believe that really does affect our success in the education system. I think being a nurse educator would be awesome!

    2. Thanks Kaci! As far as leaving our moms before school, it almost seems like going to school is like a second birth. Leaving the comfort of our mothers to go to a rather scary place. Thank goodness for the nice teachers who were there to comfort us!

  47. I was homeschooled for the first half of kindergarten, so I didn't really get the full school experience until halfway into kindergarten when my mom decided I should attend public school. I remember walking up to the classroom, holding my mom's hand, and being completely terrified. I walked into the classroom and I felt like everyone was staring at me and wondering what I was doing joining the class so late into the school year. My mom dropped me off and I remember it being one of the saddest moments of my life haha She ended up having to come back later in the day and surprised me with my favorite circus animal cookies to cheer me up. The day got better, until one girl in my class wouldn't share her crayons with me. This has been a distinct memory in my head ever since, and I have always made a point to share something I have if someone asks me. My teacher Mrs. Carol was so sweet to me and really tried to get me involved with everyone else in the class. She still is one of my favorite teachers. She helped me to love school, and now 17 years later I am still in school, getting ready to receive my Bachelor's in Nursing!

    1. Hi Kaci,
That was sweet of your mom to come and drop off some cookies for you to make you feel better. She must have known it was going to be a rough transition. Kids can be so mean to each other. I remember some girls being mean to me too, but I think it only helps us to make sure we are not that way to others.

    2. It's crazy to think you were once a small child scared and needed your animal cookies to cheer you up, now you're an adult receiving your Bachelor's in Nursing! Congrats!

  48. This is a tough thing to think about. I had so many memories of school. Some of these memories were not so great, and some of them were wonderful. I remember preschool very well, but the best memories of it were class cancellations and my birthday celebrations. I remember playing with toy dinosaurs and toy vehicles, in that level of school. This period was one of my least important parts of my life. Kindergarten was also boring, except for the movies I watched on television at home (like Genius (1999)). Elementary school was more fun, because I enjoyed the JumpStart and Math Blaster games. I also learned how to write inspirational poetry as well. In middle school, I wrote a lot of poems, acted in St. George and the Dragon, told a lot of jokes, and performed spoken-word poetry. In high school, I played the piano and went for car trips for most of my free time. High school was also one of the funniest periods of my life. From elementary school to high school, I was playing the piano, watching a lot of humorous comedies and adventures (like the Harry Potter series and The Andy Griffith Show), and experiencing a lot of funny moments in my life. College became more fun, because I introduced myself to a lot of television sitcoms. I also got an opportunity to perform spoken-word poetry, sing nature songs (“Lazy Day” and “Never Land”), and become a creative writer and imitator (by imitating British and American actors). My first impressions of school stayed the same, up to today. My first few memories were based on preschool and kindergarten, but I added my most indelible moments from each grade to make my story nicer. Almost all of my teachers made me love school (from English to math to social studies to science to my electives). I experienced a lot of challenges in my education, from day 1 to today. I learned a lot of information, in almost every class I took. I found some classes challenging, but I don’t want to say that my professors or teachers made me dislike school.

  49. I have a lot of memories from preschool, but I'm not sure if I can figure out the easiest memory. I have very vivid memories of the classrooms and playground. I went to school called Readyland. It was the preschool part of Heritage Christian School off of Mt. Vernon. I remember the long drive from the west side of town to the east side. I remember having Mulan velcro shoes and sitting crisscross apple sauce in the big room where we had our snack, sang songs, and listened to bible stories. We had to sit on these lines that were drawn with duck tape. After snack we would have nap time on cots. I thought cots were so cool and wished I had one instead of a bed. I also remember learning to skip down the hallways, making a soap dish for my mom, and the oh so cool...bike-a-thon!

  50. The earliest memory I have is from kindergarten, I and another girl were playing some game. And for some reason another boy came over and shoved a handful of lady bugs down her overalls! How mean I know, she was freaking out and crying. I also never had any really close relationships with my teachers, I still talk to my kindergarten teacher if I run into her occasionally but that's about it.

  51. The earliest memory I have of school is from Kindergarten. I have a lot of memories from Kindergarten but one of those memories is when I bought a chick home. I remember we had an incubator at school filled with eggs. I could not wait for them to hatch so I would always watch them during free time to see if one would hatch. Once the eggs hatched every child had a chance to bring a baby chick home. I remember the day I picked out the chick I would bring home, my mom was there with me helping me pick one out. I remember I had to take it home in a brown lunch bag and it was hopping in there the whole time. I was excited to bring it home because I would finally have a pet, I would always play with it and carry it around in a little Easter basket I had. I have always enjoyed going to school and have never experienced anything that would make me hate school. I have never had any teachers that have made me hate school either. Overall my time in elementary, jr.high, and high school was a good experience.

  52. One thing that I have noticed and that has permanently stuck with me through out all of my school years has been each of my teacher’s dedication to teaching. Fortunately, I have been blessed with the most caring individuals to teach me what I now know. I remember that even when I was in preschool my teacher, Mrs. Knudson, had everything well organized. I was able to see that she loved her job because she demonstrated it to her students through her dedication. She didn’t care that we were real young. She took the time to get us all involved into learning something or another. She taught us how to count as well as the alphabet through visual diagrams or by using snack samples. She even went as far as to teach us how to run a ladybug farm and grow a plant. From preschool and on every teacher that I have had has been great, and I feel like they have always taken that extra step to teach their students. I feel that this tactic has been what has helped me stay engaged in each class. Also this has brought the teachers and students closer, which I believe is very important to me because I don’t believe I could have stayed focused if there was tension between my teacher and I. My teachers have made it easier for me loving school.

  53. My memories from school as a child would have to be the support from the family and the schools. I realized at a young age how involved and how everybody worked with each other to make sure me and the other kids were well off and were developing. I had some amazing teachers dating back to pre-school and Kindergarten. I think having teachers that truly care and having a supportive family all being cohesive and working with each other is major key in the success and development of children.

  54. When I was in Pre-K I had to use the restroom. There were no restrooms inside the class and unfortunately, every kid that had to go needed to be accompanied by the teacher or the teacher assistant. That day, both my Teacher and the TA were busy. It felt like I waiting for ages. Finally, the TA walked me over the restroom. I was barely holding it in as we were walking. When I got there I was having trouble unbuckling my overalls. My anxiety shot up to the sky and next thing I know it, I am peeing myself. I couldn't hold it any longer. It was a terrifying experience. To this day I have a love -hate relationship with overalls.

GREETINGS AND BASIC COURSE INFO

!!!!NO MEETING THIS SATURDAY!!!! (we will meet later in the semester)

EMAIL: bschmoll@csub.edu

Greetings,

This course has some weekly assignments that you must keep up on. There are also a few other papers and books to read throughout the semester. But if you keep up with the weekly assignments on here, your writing will improve and you will put yourself in a great position to do well in this class!

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline(Saturday) each week. Furthermore, if you are in the habit of writing everything on Saturday you will not receive full credit. Why? There would be no time for others to interact with your writing. Write early; write often! Right? Right!

HERE IS THE WORK THAT MUST BE COMPLETED EACH WEEK...

FIRST, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

SECOND, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

THIRD, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS IN PART THREE EACH WEEK.
